Baseball and dogs!

Well, the long, long, long, long, long, long wait was actually worthwile. After a four hour and 47 minute delay, Jon Lester finally got to throw his first Major League pitch. And just like Papelbon, he struck out the first batter he faced in his career.

Now, Game 2 — originally scheduled for 8 p.m. tonight, as I’m sure most of you have heard, will be played at noon tomorrow. The regularly scheduled game for tomorrow has been switched from 2 to 5 p.m. So fans who had tix for tonight’s game, those tix will be good at noon tomorrow, and fans who had tix for the regular game on sunday can use them at 5.

Again, those fans who sat here for that four hour and 47 minute delay deserve the biggest props humanly imaginable. That is great. And how about this for an added twist? In about the second inning, the Red Sox announce that they were giving out free hot dogs all night, as long as supplies last!

More later,

Ian.

i’m typing this 1-handed as I am on hold (again) with mlb.tv/com. I’m blacked out due to FOX network having rights to all games that start before 7 (on saturday, I guess). I was told by 1 of there reps earlier that the game would be shown at 7 P.M.. (It hasn’t started yet) I waited all day and all I get to do listen to this schitty music on hold. Is anyone else experiencing this????? If I finally get the game (I’ll be ecstatic) and I’ll let you know. Oh wait, I’m being answered now. It turns out it’s not supposed to be blacked out and they are trying to get it to us. Stand by. Now theY’re telling me that there is some confusion as to whether or not it’s blacked out… DAM’NT I’M CONFUSED… CAN’T I JUST WATCH MY BASEBALL GAME???

Ellen:Did you ever get it I am havong the same problem.

I’m sorry I didn’t check back in, I got so mad w/mlbtv/com i finally got back through about 9:00, I was on hold so long I finally decided to re-boot, but the computer wouldn’t allow mE to shut down (was it trying to tell me something?) and powered back up, I still didnt have it at 9:30 so I called again. While I was on hold, miraculuosly, I tried it again and it came in. I’m not real sure about the time, but I did get to see Lester pitch some. Not too bad. Look, if I had to sit for 7 1/2 hours waiting for my debut, I’d have been sitting there with my head in a trash can. (for all 7 1/2 hours and probably would have had to take out onto the mound too!!) gotta give the kid props, he did all right according to the line. I really wish we could get over this rain stuff. We’ve got too many games to make up as it is. Makes me think that maybe they ought to rethink the schedule and start our season out west, (out there in April-May it’s warm and usually dry).

We just couldn’t get it done tonight, but at least the crankees lost too, as well as Toronto. So same same.

I can’t see either game tomorrow as I’m working a double (14 hrs). Please you guys, I’ll be home at 11pm please fill me in on what I will have missed. (is either game on espn, that would be good, I could have the bar tv’s on.)

I have to say I miss danielfagen, hope his trip is over soon. I’ll read you tomorrow night and post after, till then…. NATION STAY STRONG!!!!

PS DID ALL Y’ALL GET WASHED OUT IN THE RAIN TOO?? WHERE ARE YOU GUYS?? MISS YOU!!

SORRY ‘BOUT THE 2X POST, I GOT A MESSAGE FROM THE SITE TELLING ME I HAD CREATED A MALICIOUS COMMENT (ME??) NEVER FOUND, HIT POST AND IT CAME UP TWICW, AGAIN, SORRY.

Well we finally got to see some of the youth that we have heard much about. Although I was not able to see the game, following it on the gameday site it appeared he must have been ready to pitch even after the long delay. getting out of that second inning jam with bases loaded, he had to have showed some poise. So to that I say good job John. Now on to the ninth inning, I know Foulke has been bothered by back problems, but it appears the outcomes have been about the same from last year to this year. Before making the next comment I want to say that I believe Francona is a good manager and I am glad he is on the bench for us. I just wonder if being the type of person who always has his players back, if he does not sometimes allow his players to get a little too involved in the decision of whether they are really ready to play. My next question is one I would like to see if Ian might be able to give me an answer to. Do you think not having our normal pitching coach involved in day to day practice and decisions has had anything to do with our pitching problems? Well lets go get two from the rangers today.

Ellen,
I had the same problems with MLB.TV. Seriously, do you think that MLB could get the stupid blackout problems fixed? It’s pretty annoying for me to be paying them a fee for a service, but not be allowed to use it…I’m not sure about you guys, but I usually like to get what I pay for. That being said, apparently FOX had the rights to the game yesterday because it was being “Nationally Televised”…hmmm…Unfortunately, the local FOX affiliate must have mistaken Cheers reruns for the baseball feed. Yes, thats right, Cheers.

I think the most frustrating part of the whole situation is waiting on hold with MLB.TV for an hour and then having a person tell me that the game is “supposed” to be televised and that MLB.TV is sorry, but they can’t do anything for me. How about give me my back?!?

“Cheers” to MLB!!

Wow, that comment was pretty disgruntled. I guess it was just because I had been looking forward to watching Lester start for well over a year now. The disappointment just got me upset. ok, well, lets look for a good start from the other 2 young guns, Beckett and Pauley.

free dogs = classy move. esp if they were the new hebrew national dogs….yum.

this seemed to get a rise out of the MLB.com crowd, so I thought i’d post it here too:

GENERIC POST-GAME RSN COMPLAINT FORM

I can’t believe the Sox { lost to ____ again / only beat ___ } by a couple runs. They are a weak team { by anyone’s count / due to injuries } and should be beatable, especially for the $$ we’re spending. We have no chance of { the pennant / winning the World Series / staying 5 games over .500 }. It’s about time to fire { Francoma / Theo / the whole F.O. }. I could manage this ball club better myself.

For one thing, Francoma left in starter ___ too long. he was clearly done after ___ innings and should have been replaced. But how could he bring in { Tavarez / Riske / Seanez } instead of { Timlin / Papelbon / Timlin / Papelbon } ? Those guys are done and so is Foulke. They need to trade ___ and ___ for Clemens, Halliday, Kazmir, and D-Train. Seanez is worthless. Wells is done. Beckett is an emotional hothead. And how could they have let Pedro go? Clement is no replacement and he lost it ever since he got hit last year. I still can’t believe they traded Arroyo for Wily Mo…the Reds are going to beat us in the WS this year. They should bring up some of those young arms and put Lester and Pauley permanently in the rotation. I said this a year ago.

Not to mention our offense is { inconsistent / lame / having an off-year }. I can’t believe Ortiz is nearly below .250 again and can’t adjust to the shift. Varitek is { slumping / injured / over the hill } and should be traded for someone with the arm of Bengie Molina but the speed of WIllie Harris. Why can’t the F.O. get this done? And Francoma should put Varitek down in the lineup. Not to mention Gonzalez is only hitting ___ this week while Cora is cooling his heels on the bench and is just as good defensively…don’t confuse me with the stats, I seen him on the field. Nixon had a lucky night but is history, stick a form in him. And Youk should go back to leadoff and they should put Crisp down until he is batting .500 or better. We should also trade a combo of ___ and ___ for Vernon Wells, Blalock, and Soriano. Now THAT would be a lineup. You heard it here first.

I still can’t believe Damon totally betrayed us by taking more $ from the ********. He shoulda honored “the best fans anywhere” and played here for less money. If I had Theo’s job I woulda made it happen.

I actually like this year’s team. I think we have a good balance of offense and defense. The pitching staff hasn’t been as good as they can, but there are plenty of bright spots.
I’m actually of the belief that Timlin’s stint on the DL will do him some good. He has been used a lot over the past 2 seasons, and I think the rest will set him up better for the stretch run. It seems to me like the team is starting to come together now, especially since we have a new infield. The team is much better than last year’s team.

I’m also a big fan of the addition of Wily Mo. Although it would help to have Arroyo still, I think trading for Wily Mo was a shrewd move…anytime you can get a player with his talent, you take it. I think he’s going to improve tremendously over the next 2 years.

Those are just my opinions on this year’s edition.

Big Papi…simply amazing.

Ortiz can be on a bad streak but when you need him he’s there. Amazing, really.

2 things: a) why are tavarez and seanez still on this team? b) why the **** doesn’t theo make a move for a decent starter? our #2 guy (beckett) can’t seem to keep the ball down and is giving up home run to everyone and their brother. and don’t even get me started on clement (i mean if they can give him 8 mil a year, why couldn’t they have given pedro 13? extra 5 mil for an extra 10 wins and 3 points less on the ERA every year)

Hey everyone,

To everyone: I apologize but this one may tend to be lengthy: To matt@marx: While I agree with you regarding MLB.COM/TV (we are paying for a service and we should get what we are paying for, you should have been offered or have asked for a credit), I disagree with you strongly regarding this years team. Please just see this as my observation and not as criticism. I don’t think anyone can say how Bronson would have done this year with the Sox. He could have fallen completely on his butt; how would you have felt about him then?? I think that Wily Mo did a very good job fiiling in for Coco while he was on the DL. Although Alex Gonzalez is still struggling alot, he has come up with a couple of very key hits recently. I do have to say that I think that Cora is at least comparable if not better (given his better bat) that AGON. As far as Nixon, you really hit a nerve there. I think this is a guy who really wants to be with the Sox next year. He’s giving his all DAY IN, DAY OUT. he’s going to into free agency at the end of the season and I for one think we should keep him. He gets hits when we need them, he’s always there in right to snag that ball that’s just about to snake out, fair or foul. He’s been here since forever and is nothing but good for the club. As far as Damon, remember when he hit the fence in center/right last year, and was laid out for a while. They did an mri on the shoulder and it was determined that he needed surgery in the off season. He never had it (that was publicized). How long before that shoulder sends him onto the DL?? It’s an accident waiting to happen. Plus right now Damon is batting .293 and Crisp is at .303, pretty close, I admit but Coco has age on his side. I was REAL Damon supporter, but you’ve got to move on. We’ll never know the true story of how the negotiations went. But I trust Theo and company. Anyway, I apologize for having “keyboard runon” but while I applaud constructive criticim of our TEAM, anything else does nothing but eat away at our foundation. I hope that you don’t take this as anything except a rebuttal. We all want nothing but the the ultimate for the Sox, but I think that positive thinking and ideas helps more than can be proven by any science.

ellen…my post was rather obviously (i thought) a satire.

Tavares is a joke and true fans remember Matt Clement smiling in the dugout after getting shelled in the playoffs by the White Sox. Pitching is the key and the Sox need to make it a priority, NOW!!!
