Let's play two

Ernie Banks had it right all those years ago. The sun is shining and it’s a great day to play two. Oh, did you guys know this rookie named Daisuke Matsuzaka was pitching tonight against Boston College? I’m not sure if you’ve heard, but the Red Sox acquired him for a cool posting feel of $51.1 million and then signed him to a six year, $52 million contract.

Oh, sorry, I just wrote that last paragraph for the Tom Hanks character in Castaway. Of course, unless you’ve been living in a proverbial cave, you’ve heard all about the Dice man. It should be fun to watch him pitch. Stop looking for those gyro balls, OK? He doesn’t throw one.

The thing that bears watching tonight is the communication between Matsuzaka and Jason Varitek. Will they find it easy to be on the same page despite the language barrier?

Manny is also taking his first hacks of the spring in the early game. And Okajima will make his first appearance. Got to like the Game 1 lineup. Lugo-Youk-Papi-Manny-Drew-Lowell-Coco filling out the first seven spots. That poor Matsuzaka won’t get any run support in the second one because Varitek and Pedroia will be the only starters playing.

Not much news in Terry Francona’s pre-game chat other than the fact that Craig Hansen (back woes) has been cleared to throw a side session. Mike Timlin is still a few days away.

I’ll be back with more thoughts later in the day.

Ian.

What is up with the pit-stained uniforms this year? I felt bad for Joel Pineiro the other night when they showed a clip of him throwing and he had a big, blue pit stain. Then I noticed everybody had them. They’re part of the uniform. Why did the Sox think this was a good look?

It’s not just the Red Sox. If you watched the Twins game the other night, you’d have seen the Minnesota shirts had them too. It’s an MLB design.

Thank you, Ian, for noting that the $51 million the Sox paid for Matsuzaka was a “posting fee.” I am heartily sick of reading/hearing “they paid $51 million just to TALK to him!” No, they DIDN’T. They could have talked until they were blue in the face; if they didn’t SIGN him, they didn’t pay. Sheesh.

Dan, I too noticed it on the Sox uniforms and on the Twins. Definitely an awful look for any player. So now the question is, why did MLB think this was a good look?

I’m kinda disappointed I’m going to miss the NESN special showing of Matsuzaka’s work tonight. I’ll be on a bus headed home when he’s pitching. Oh well..as I keep trying to remind myself, it’s only spring training!

i have to agree, when i first saw the new designs, i thought Curt was sweating ALOT, but everyone had it, its not a good look, anyway, does anyone know where i could find thosegameday games? i dont wanna pay for gameday audio, i mean wat they used ot have, the little text that updated as the game went on with the picture of the batter? any help would be great, thanks.

good luck Dice-K

oh sorry, I dont know why it posted twice…

Good to see Snyder throw the ball well today. I saw where he is out of options, and the Sox must either put him on the opening day roster or place him on waivers and hope he is not claimed by another team. If he throws the ball well in spring training, and Tavarez struggles, it would be ideal to deal Tavarez to a team that wants him as a starter, and keep Snyder, who has value as a long reliever and a spot starter.

doom, the Gameday program you were refering to, if you mean what I think you mean, appears to not run during Spring Training. I imagine it’ll be back for Opening Day.

If money is an issue, the Gameday Audio program is only 15 bucks for an entire season – Spring training, regular season, post season. It costs less than a DVD, so I’d reccommend that.

Also, again.. does anyone know anything about when STate of the Red Sox.com Nation is debuting again? Ian?

i’ll see if i can find out.

I wouldn’t be surprised to find that the Pit Stain Uniforms where planned to help the Umpires call that high strike that never gets called. Still, they look silly in my opinion.

oh, i didnt think about that, thanks alot, I was worried they just ended it lol and i didnt realize the audio was only 15 bux, thanks again!

and thats a good call with the pit-stains. I hope to never see them again, however.

Ian, how many mph a pitcher will gain on his fastball come April compared to his first start in March ? 2, 3, maybe 4 ? Are there pitchers who go full throttle right off the bat ?
