Game 2 — A battle of top lefties

I don’t think there will be any kind of letdown here tonight on the heels of Opening Day. How can there be when you have Scott Kazmir going against Jon Lester?

Consider that these two power arms were built within 17 days of each other in January, 1984. They could be linked for years to come, especially if they stay with their respective teams for the long haul.

These are two of the best young left-handers in the game. The 24-year-old Lester came in with a record of 27-8. Kazmir? He is 47-37. The Red Sox could have traded Lester to the Twins for Johan Santana, but passed it up. The Mets, of course, had the utter indignity of trading Kazmir to the Rays for the immortal Victor Zambrano, something they’ve regretted ever since.

I pity the poor hitters who have to face these two guys on this frigid night at Fenway.

Another interesting subplot tonight is Gabe Kapler vs. Rocco Baldelli. Baldelli, the former Ray, is making his debut for Boston. The opposite is true for Kapler, forever a favorite here at Fenway from his four years (2003-06) with the Sox.

In a shocker, Rocco got a big hand in his first at-bat. As my press box sidekick Lenny Megliola just said, “We ought to get the applause meter out — Rocco vs. Gabe.”

I cannot believe I can’t watch this game in Jax. It’s blacked out on ESPN2, Extra Innings, mlb.tv and it’s supposed to be on Sunsports, but we’re getting some stupid kickboxing thing. Unbelievable. Anyone else in FL having issues?

Wow…by the time my other comment will go through it’ll be the 5th inning! I can’t see the game, but the strike zone look questionable for both teams tonight. Is it just me or is the little box that I’m looking at off?

The game was preempted up here for a Maple Leafs game. I swear they toyed with me this afternoon. THIS game was listed. I tuned in to find a faceoff happening. All I can get is the Jays/Tigers game.

Ha! Up here in Toronto, they did have the game listed this afternoon (I’m sure Julia and Greg could tell you how excited I would’ve been) but has since been preemted with the MAPLE LEAFS/SABRES game…However, for our baseball viewing they do have the Blue Jays/Tigers game on…if you call that baseball…I wonder if they will have any issues today with disorderly fans?

I believe I will try one more time…and then I give up! Rays/Red Sox game was scheduled to be on TV. They got my hopes WAY up. They preempted with hockey game…A Maple Leafs game at that…and I can get the Jays/Tigers game.

Of course they all pop up!!! Go figure! Sorry about that people…I really didn’t think they were all going to make it through…I feel so bad now. :(

Garry….

Who is your cable provider? I have read where there have been some issues with Sunshine and some cable providers. Only issue for me is Staats and Kennedy, pathetic those two are!

This system on M.L.B. is very slow, almost as slow as Lee Smith coming out of the bullpen. LOL…

Ian…

I think the lefty we’ll be seeing a long time with the Rays is David Price. Price is in A.A.A. but will be called up soon. Price is a stud and wasn’t fazed at all during game #7. Of course Price will be a starter and a quality one at that.

I don’t think Kazmir will be around for the long haul. He has a very small frame and isn’t built for season after season. Lester on the other hand will have a career similar too Petite but without the juice/HGH.

Garry…

Only issue for me is Staats and Kennedy. Sorry too here about your problem over there in the Jax. area. It is on here in St. Pete on Sunshine. Who is your cable provider? I have read where there are some problems with Sunshine and some cable providers.

Ian…

Personally I think the Rays best lefty is in A.A.A. and that is David Price. Price is a stud ( #1 pitcher ) and will be around for a long time. I don’t think Kazmir is built for the long haul, season after season. His frame is too small, like a Guidry. I think Lester will have a career like Andy Petite, of course no juice in Lester’s system!

Hey all!! Got caght up with the lawyer this afternoon,,, I was here for 1st pitch, and Lester looked good… seems to need some settling down now.. And what was that by Kevin?????Maybe it hit the baserunner??

Getting Price up will stir things up a bit in the division. He seems to like pitching in tough situations. I can’t wait to see him in the rotation.

1-0 Rays…

Garry…….

My girlfriend’s cable provider is Comcast and she is having the same issue, not sure why. Call your provider tomm. and find out what the story is there.

I think that Staats is stuck in th e80;s with that perm!!!! Next thing you know he’ll have a gerri-curl!!!!! At least Migraine isnt there.. but… I’ve got Remy and Orsillo for the next 160 games… its worth the money.. and I can watch it in any room in the house. It’s a good deal since I dont spend on anything else!!!

Man, that was Papi’s pitch he looked at!!

IDOBELIEVEIDOBELIEVEIDOIDOIDOIDOBELIEVE!!!

One sec Julia, ….My post actually went though the first time??? Wha? That’s gotta be a first today.

Saito!!!! Let’s see what he can do!

Saito!!!! Let’s see what he can do!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO Not a good start!

WHY TAKASHI??
Maybe he’ll be like Okajima. First batter he ever faces: home run. Dominant the rest of the season. Anyone?

Julia!….THAT’S MY SCOTTY!!!!!! WOOO HOOOO!!!!
That feels better….I know it’s a little late considering it’s the 8th inning, but with the comments posting like they are – better late than never!

HOME RUN FOR EVAN!

Elizabeth – I hope so!!

Ginny – You go girl!

Don’t worry about Saito. The guy has nasty stuff, and he consistently throws strikes. I would rather see a reliever who consistently throws strikes and every once in awhile gets roughed up than someone like Manny Delcarmen, who has great stuff but has awful command and often finds himself behind in the count. Sooner or later, walks and deep counts (when the hitter knows you gotta throw a heater) will get you. I like Delcarmen, but he is sometimes very frustrating to watch. Until he can consistently throw strikes, he belongs in a middle relief role and not a key set-up role.

Jeff

PAPI!!!!! Keep it going boys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

YOOOOUUUUUUKKKKKKK!!!!

NO ROCCO!!!!! Let’s not waste the two guys on base!

BAY!!!!!!!! Best team for scoring runs with 2 outs!!!!!1

Don’t you go hitting our Lowell! grrrrrr

Wow, I’ve been trying to sign in and have been getting an “error” message. What’s up with that?

Sox are having a rough time today. Maybe they can make a comeback and give the Rays something to think about. By the time this message posts the game will be over. LOL
Nice chatting with you. Hope this computer slowness problem gets resolved soon.

Ump needs new glasses!

Wow…it is slowing down more? Or is that just what it seems like.

Arnie – MLBLogs is having “issues” – they’ve asked that we be a little patient!

Julia

Don’t all Umps and Refs need new glasses, Julia? LOL!

Yankees LOST!!!! They are going for 0-162!

RIGHT ON!!!

Brian, Comcast is also my provider. Ticks me off. Paid $169 for MLB extra innings today, which is also on for free this week. I’ll never understand why Jax is in the blackout area for both Miami and Tampa. I’ve been keeping track on game day a little. Sox have had chances, not big hit.

Couldn’t tell for sure, but looked like Lester started getting behind a little, plus a little shoddy fielding didn’t help.

We got ab out – but come on guys! Looking like little leaguers!

Who is playing today – it can’t be the Red Sox!!!!

Well we have another Senor EZ (Lopez, Tavarez. Seanez)… When will they get wise to this guy.. every batter in the bigs is wise to him!!!! Let javier Lopez Go!!!!!

baldeli 5th in order, no pinch hit for lowrie who batted 239 last yr lefty(nancy or carter on bench), and then lopez in 9th….sigh,,,,,judge

Rally cap time!!! LET”S GO SOX!!!!

You guys are getting quieter in here…

Bummer! Until tomorrow!! BUT – we are ahead of the Yankees!

Julia

Here we go…top of the order with Balfour trying to shut it down…

Garry…

I think that will be a problem all year with Comcast, I feel bad for fans of the Rays and also fans like yourself. The fan getting screwed….again.

The telecast stunk and of course the outcome as well. Lester looked the Lester we all saw last April. I chalk it up as a bad start, he’ll be just fine in 2009.

One thing I’ll be watching as the season moves along is when the Sox are down by 4 runs, what will happen? The power isn’t there, so they’ll have too scratch there way back. Tough too do against some good pitching, T.B. certainly has some good arms. I’m still not sold on the pen of the Rays. Closer is a big question mark.

Ramirez looked solid coming out of the pen for Boston. He will get alot of big outs for the Red Sox this season. Nasty against the lefties and righties. His change-up should give lefties problems. Not too mention his 95 m.p.h. fastball with movement.

I guess Boston will have too take the division with a record of 161-1. LOL….What is there magic number? HA..HA…LOL…

This system on this blog is BRUTALLY SLLLLLLLLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWWW. Other than that, life is GREAT!

Rays, baby, Rays! Someone find Greg, and tell him to put his broom away! Save it for the Yankees series!

As long as the Sox win series, that is what baseball is all about. Get some sweeps in there as well. Peaks and valley’s, hopefully more peaks! That is what pitching will do for you. Avoid those losing streaks.

Canuck…

Give that broom too a Birds fan in Baltimore, LOL!!

Does anyone else think something is not right with Lester? Apart from tonight, his last two ST outings he had several walks, and control issues. This outing, he seemed particularly shaky (shaky calls by the umps not helping, of course!). Does anyone else think so? I hope not!
Red Sox did not play well much at all tonight. Even Youk had an error! (When’s the last time THAT has happened? 1972???). He also seems slow with the bat.
I saw comments about the ump needing glasses. BOY, DID HE EVER!!

To quote Judge ?moaning all?. Sigh…there goes the perfect season lol.
Let?s face it, a team has to hit and score to win. 2 runs won?t win a lot of games even if Beckett was pitching. Lester struggled but wasn?t terrible like CC and Wang. Joe Maddon knew he faced a tough lefty (although Lester didn?t turn out to be one last night) and played small ball (safety squeeze with none outs) in the early going. Maddon knows every run counts.
This may sound like Monday morning quarterbacking and it is. Are the Sox and we fans rushing Lester by revering him as a no. 2 starter? We already treat Lester like a Cy Young and a Hall of Fame pitcher. Is it too much pressure for Lester? We will see how Dice-K performs this afternoon.

Well, here’s to Thursday morning QBing, then, Andy!
Yes it is possible that Lester is being rushed. If so, I hope Tito will us some of our pitching depth and rearrange the rotation. But he seemed to thrive in that role last year. So I am not convinced (yet!–I can be convinced, though!) that the issue is mental with Lester.
Give credit to Maddon and the Rays. They did play small-ball very well. But if Lester had been able that day to deliever the pitch we’ve seen him throw in these situations before, there would not have been much small-ball happening. We’ll see. But my antenna was piqued yesterday (and in ST). Come on Dice-K! GO SOX!

I thought on the squeeze, Lester should have went too first base. He had NO CHANCE getting Kapler. Give the Rays the run and make sure the inning doesn’t get any bigger. I’m not even sure if Lester would have gotten Bartlett at first but he had a better chance. After that it unraveled for Lester, he did get Longoria too ground into a D.P. That inning could have been alot worse.

Sox had there chances but squandered them. Kazmir was o.k.

Remember folks it is only game 2 of the season, last time I checked there are 160 games left. I’m guessing that is more than enough, just a hunch. LOL!!

What is the Orioles magic number?

moanin all…i know most of you dont want ot hear it but im gonna pick on my pet peave already….if your a tito disciple then dont read my opinion here…it irks me to no end the moves or non moves this guy makes….i love the way he sticks with plrs and lets them work thru tuff times….i love the way he keeps the clubhouse loose and is friendly with his plrs….BUT…..i really hate the way he manages…we have an awesome bench and he needs to start managin appropriately….toughest division in baseball and we need to manage each game like its a must win game…by the end of the season it assuredly will be a 3 horse…sox, rays, and toronto…yanks and orioles will be reasonably close also…my point im leading to is certain plrs need to be hit for if they are in situations that they just dont produce…balfour comes in and we had nancy and carter on bench and also other options….i love lowrie but he struggled lefty last yr….that at bat was very important…lopez …well this guy stats werent bad last yr but he pitched in weird situation and had an inherited runner percentage from hell….he just plain cant get it done…bring in another of those productive youngsters and trade him for a goat to eat the outfield grass….maybe a bag of used baseballs…rocco battin 5th also?….lord…..jake leadin off against a nasty lefty….lord…..sigh….ok ill stop now but the list goes on and on….pls use that bench tito when it applies and not just to empty on sunday when u decide to rest all your starters at once….judge

First let me clarify I am not advocating and moving Lester down the rotation. I think Lester pitched well enough to win with run support unlike the Donut Boy and Wang pitched. Lester is young and easily gets unraveled in situation like that. I mentioned the squeeze play just to demonstrate the way how Maddon would manage a game.
The little thing that a manager did could make the difference as to the outcome of the game. It is only game 2 but if you squander one game here and there could possibly cost you the season. The Rays will remain competitive to the end. B/w the Orioles magic number is 159. lol

007…

I don’t think Lester pitched good enough too win, he deserved what he got last night, the L under his name. That all being said, the Red Sox pitching is the strength of this team. The Red Sox bullpen could be one of the best in baseball.

Also why not a pitchout during that attempted squeeze? I wasn’t surprised the Rays tried that. That is how the Rays play, small ball. Maddon likes too play some N.L. ball in the A.L.

I don’t think Lester felt any pressure last night. He battled cancer, that is far worse than pitching on the mound in any park! Lester is a very composed/mature individual. We saw that many times last season! Lester will take the ball 35 times and will have some clunkers and that certainly was the case last night.

a pitch out is what i would have done also brian…but….that is a managers decision….ugh…..well u know what i mean….judge

a pitch out is what i would have done also brian…but….that is a managers decision….ugh…..well u know what i mean….judge

Judge: We got your point. You don’t have to post it twice every time. lol
Your previous comment seems to be a bit radical but not totally senseless. I have been saying during the offseason that the Sox batters have to hit and the pitchers have to pitch in order to win. We cannot expect our manager to manage to win a game. I am not critical of Francona yet. It?s only game 2. When I saw the lineup that Badelli was batting 5th in front of Bay and Lowell, I meant to comment before the game last night. Then I changed my mind saying to myself Francona must know better than I do. At least Francona is batting Varitek in the 9th hole which is a noted improvement on the part of Francona. Let’s win the series. Go Sox.

007..

Judge is known as the double poster. lol. Actually this system on M.L.B. is having major issues and it should be fixed by now. It has been going on for a few days.

Joyce goes deep, Dice-K doesn’t give up many longballs.

You guys are right about this blog. It’s getting to be a real pain to post here. It just took me 15 minutes just to get logged in…….

It is soooooooooooooooo painful to watch Dice-K pitch. Why can’t Farrell do anything with him? Every game is 5 innings, 4 hours and tough on the bullpen. Man, I’d hate to be playing defense out there behind him. Seems like those guys are outhere the whole day.

Garza looks very good.

It going to be another long day for the Redsox. The Sox starters have to pitch a shutout to win.

This game is an hour and a half old after 3.5 innings! Yawn!

Garza has the best stuff on the Rays staff. He shutdown Boston in the A.LC.S.

Agree very much about playing behind Dice-K Those fielders must say many things too themselves, most of it not kind.

Garry…

Tough for you today, Staats/Kennedy and a longggggg game. Sounds like fun. not!

Garza struggled last year on the road but so far so good for him. A steal trade…Garza/Bartlett for Harris and crazy boy Delmon Young. Garza is excellent and Bartlett is solid at s.s. and also has some good at bats.

Yeah Brian, I really like the way Garza approaches the game. He goes right after hitters, much like Josh Beckett. Here’s my best pitch…….. hit it if you can. I thought Kennedy might be an improvement over Migrane, but he’s falling into idiocy as well.

Four runs up, runner on first, nobody out, what the hell is Pena thinking about. Why wouldn’t he just bang the ball down the third base line? What a freaking joke!!!!

Now Eibar doubles and the Rays could have had a big inning. Many of today’s players really suck with the way they approach the game, and Pena and Ortiz are among them.

Yeah Brian, I really like the way Garza pitches. He goes right after hitters. Here’s my best pitch, hit it if you can. He’s got a good livley arm.

Third game of the season, and I’m disgusted already. I think I’ll skip Dice-K games from now on……..Oh yeah, the pitcher who leads the league in walks should intentionally walk Gross to load the bases…… BRILLIANT!

Luck to get out of it.

Garry: Look at the bright side. At least the starting pitching is not wasted on a day the Sox aren’t hitting at all. The way it has been going the last 2 days, the Sox SP has to pitch a shut out to win.

Barring a dramtic comeback, at the end of the day the Sox will tie the Yanks for the last place.

TEK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just got in to see Tek hit a HR!!!!! WHOOO HOOOO!!!!

Julia
http://werbiefitz.mlblogs.com/

I got up at 7 this morning and started the login process and finally, here I am. How do you all manage to get onto Brownie Points in time for the game? I’m going to press the “submit” button a gazillion times, too. Haha

Anyway, I dismissed the Rays as a fluke, but they are showing that I was wrong. Dang!!!!

Garry, I am with you on the modern players being for the most part only partial ballplayers. The old-time guys would do what was best considering the circumstances of the game. Now, most of the players have only one thing in mind and don’t seem to care about the other aspects of the game. You can see it in the strike-outs. Hitters just don’t mind striking out 150 times a year. And pitchers? Starters going 7 innings per game is the norm. What??? If you pitch 5, 6 complete games a year you are a stud. That’s pure BS. Ah well, you and I are old farts and it is beginning to show. Whining about the old glory days.
Well, I’m off to sit on my rocker on the front porch.

Brian, have you tried Ciroc vodka yet? Supposed to be smoother than Grey Goose. Give it a shot(pun intended). But don’t mix it.

Go Sox!!!!

Well.. Let’s get this party (2009 season…) started.. Shake off the dust of the last 2 games and the rust of the offseason, and start kicking some serious Angel Bhutt..
btw, My condolensces to the Angels and to the pitchers family for their loss. Absolutely TRAGIC!!! too young to be gone so soon, and they say he had real potential. God Bless Him, his family and his friends…
This is a short West Coast trip this time.. Just LAA and Oak..
Then heading towards home. Tek is hitting, that’s a good thing… now we need to get Papi off his butt!!!!
Woooooooooooo-Woooooooooooooo I ALWAYS BELEIVE!!!

Arnie. I was always partial to Belvedere (VERY partial),,, thats another one you don’t use a mixer with, if anything just clubsoda…SO SO SO SMOOTH!!!!

Yeah, Belvedere is good. I think this other one is more reasonably priced but just as, if not more, smooth. The Ciroc is made with grapes. But don’t hold that against it.

Andy, I know that I said I was goingt o send a nap of directions to all the donut shops in NYC to CCm but Ithink I should have sent him a map of all the Michelin Tire Dealers in The Tri state area.. he looks more like the Michelin Man!!!!
Oh has anyone heard about the Sullivan tire contest to win a hand signed Dustin glove?? You have to log on to sullivantires.com to enter.. well I tried and unless you live in New England YOU CANT ENTER… THAT SUCKS… I can pay nationer Dues and pay for the MLB package but I’m not eligible to win their contests??? I couldnt enter to win the World Series Ring last year either!!!!! Pissed me right off!!

Well I guess everybody has left the building.. See y’all later..

You can slap Tito all you want about not using the bench….but a pitch out on a SAFETY SQUEEZE will not stop what happened last night. Kapler did not break for the plate until the bunt was down. You can’t blame Tito for everything….it was a well executed play by the Rays….who I am very, very afraid of at this point. They are a team willing to do whatever it takes…..But don’t get the misuse of the Sox bench mixed up with good execution by the other team…..

Arnie and Garry, the posting and sign-up problems have been a royal problem for quite a while now. (It is one reason I did not blog during the game last night.) It is what is causing all this “stuttering” on the blog (and others–before I realized the problem, between false starts, retries, etc., I ended up posting on another person’s blog 19 times!). It is like a backed-up printer’s queue! MLB.com says, “we’re working on it” (Hmmm…sounds fully committal to me! Not exactly). Let’s just say I’m not seeing an end to this problem for a while! :/ GO SOX!

Amen, Brother Craig!!! I agree that we should (at this point) be VERY SKEERD of the DEVILRAYSDEVILRAYSDEVILRAYS!!!!! (heavy acccent on the
D EVIL partionof the name!!!!)
BTW…. where have YOU BEEN??? ..missed you!

Greeg… It seems to happen alot more frequently during the games as opposed to times like this.. mines seems to be running alot faster tonight.

Ellen,
It usually takes someone on here to go after Tito for every little thing that happens to fire me up. I agree with Judge that the bench role will be important this year but it seems like Tito gets blamed for everything right down to the poor guy who ended up with “obstruction” seats at Fenway. Tito is not perfect and we all know it but pitching out on a safety squeeze prevents nothing. If he gets blamed for that then then folks aren’t looking at everything equally when it comes to criticizing him. That’s just wrong. Suicide squeeze is a different story and speaking of that….here come the Angels…..another “small ball” team. Anyways…how have you been???????? I’m back and ready for some real baseball. It’s hard for me to get hot and bothered during spring training. When do you turn 50? I just turned 50 last month!!!!!!! I DO BELIEVE, I DO BELIEVE, WHOOO HOOOOO. Let’s go Red Sox, clap, clap, clap clap clap

Ellen,
I think the server is having a hard time processing everything when there are a ton of users during games….might be time for an upgrade!!!!!! Not us…them!!!!

I think that has a lot to do with how many people are attempting to post simultaneously during games, Ellen. Just my hunch/theory. MLB needs to deal with it though, while it is still early in the season (I’d have thought that was their ST!). But I think that is the reason. Here’s to hoping!
It is going to be surreal trying to play the Angels right after they just lost their young pitcher, Adenhart, in that car accident. I wish them the best, and pray for them. GO SOX!

Right on Greg!!!!

Arnie, I am with you any day regarding pitchers being on pitch counts and not throwing complete games anymore. 5 or 6 CG by a TEAM (let alone one pitcher–woe betide!) is an anomaly. I am still partial to the pitchers who throw CGs. Those WERE the glory days! (It’s why I hate these “specialist” pitchers that are so prevalent nowadays! It’s also why I wish starters would pitch deeper into games on a regular basis!) Can we bring them back? PLEASE??!! GO SOX!

I think that the Angels will be playing from hearts and out of their minds this weekend!!! Prayers to the Adenharts from allof us!! (sorry speaking for the group!!)… Stuff like this absolutely breaks my heart… and alledgedly the driver of the “other” vehicle was driving on a suspended license.
A SEVERE SCUMBAG

God Bless the Angels during this troubled time…….Go Tim Wakefield….need a good start from you brother!!!!!!

I agree with Arnie. Apparently most of you subscribe to MLBTV or at least try to judging from some of these comments. I just try and follow the game through Gameday and Gameday Audio. It works for me. I like Joe Castigione but most of you youger people don’ t dig radio. Too boring I guess. LOL

To borrow Judge’s infamous greeting “moanin all”. It’s official the Reds Sox are dwelling in the cellar rooming with the Yanks. The Rays have made the statement loud and clear. Take Heed and accept the fact that the Rays are real AND good. No doubt Maddon is a far better in-game manager. Off the field, Maddon is an a——. I don?t understand why Ortiz was not pinch run for in bottom 9th? What if Youk hit a double? The pitcher didn?t have to worry about 1st and concentrated on the hitter. Any runner other than Ortiz may unravel the pitcher. Sigh………….

007…

Who would have ran for Ortiz? I think the only guys that were left were Kottaras and Carter. Not exaclty speed demons. Then again Youkilis flied out so it didn’t make a difference.

I do agree that Maddon is a better in game manager than Francona, I think most would agree. I would like too see some double steals from the Red Sox, that would be nice. Safety squeeze/suicide squeeze, that is not the Red Sox philosphy. Remember it was Francona that edged out Maddon for the Red Sox job. One thing I do like about Maddon and Francona, they are not afraid! Alot of mangers and coaches in the pro ranks are afraid too fail!

I agree with you 007, the Rays have made a statement. Then again this is baseball, it is a longgggg season. I don’t T.B. has the pitching depth like Boston. Also they need a closer, Percival has seen better years. Percival hasn’t had a good year in years! If Percival was a horse, he would have been laid too rest long ago. LOL!!

This system is HORRIBLE/AWFUL. It is driving me too drink, that might be the only good thing. LOL!! Vodka and ??????????

Brian: Yesterday’s loss is a loss and I don’t blame the manager for it. Youk flied out may due in part to Percival didn’t have to worry about the first base being occupied. Coco Crisp would ideally be the pinch runner. Never mind, Coco is with the Royals. Coco had a great day yesterday.
The Rays may not have the pitching depth. But their front 4 SP are young and fearless and good. I don’t mind having any one of those as my SP.

007…

I do like the Rays starters, especially Garza and of course Price.

I was thinking Francona should have had Randy Kutcher pinch run or Steve Avery or maybe Reid Nichols. LOL!!

007…

Was Baldelli available too pinch run for Ortiz? If he was, Francona should have had him run. Then again Rocco is battling fatigue issues, he might have gotten tired and stopped at third base.

Brian: I had Carter in mind at that time. Nick Green had already pinch run for Lowell. Carter is no speedster but there was always a threat of steal that could unnerve the pitcher. The point is moot as Youk did fly out. It is always a bitter pill to lose an opening series at home to your divisional rival.

Things are looking up! It only took me 6 hours to login. Now I’ve forgotten what I was going to comment on.

Not to worry Sox fans. When our boys of summer hit the California sunshine they will be ready to kick some butt.
I agree with everyone here. Modern baseball players need to man up and play the game right.

I was listening to the radio today on my way in to work and they had an old interview with Mickey Mantle. They were talking about his 500th home run, and when he hit it the fans gave him a 3 minute standing ovation and wanted The Mick to come out of the dugout and take a bow but Mantle wouldn’t. The interviewer asked him why and in his “aw shucks” manner Mantle explained that it would be showing up the pitcher and he didn’t want to do that. He also said about today’s players, “If a guy grounds out to the 2nd baseman and moves the runner over he gets high 5’s from his teammates. That’s silly.” I agree, Mick.

Etiquette and manners… where have they gone??? Although I love it when the guys get fired up and do high fives and the like, I miss seeing manners used. I mis seeing the 2 teams at the end of a game slapping each others hands. Now its a line of the winning team slapping their teammates hands which is great but it would be nice to see the other happen as well. Sportsmanship.. You guys outplayed us, so hats off to you! Where has it gone, or am I just showing my age?
