Somber Friday in Anaheim

The Big A, Edison Field, Angel Stadium — whatever they are calling it these days — has always been one of my very favorite venues to work. The weather is always nice, the press box is in a perfect location in the open air. It’s easy to get around. I remember thinking a few times that it’s impossible to be here and not feel happy.

Well, today it is very possible. In all the times I’ve been to this park, this is the first time I’ve ever seen it be truly cloudy, gloomy and overcast as it is today. And it’s just so fitting given the mood around here after the tragic passing of Nick Adenhart yesterday. He was a 22-year-old righty with his whole career in front of him before he was killled in a needless hit-and-run accident. Just awful, absolutely awful.

It was chilling to walk into the press entrance today and see the shrine that has been created in honor of Nick. Flowers, cards, hats, uniform, pictures, you name it. Just a completely heartfelt thing that so many people have contributed to.

The Red Sox clubhouse had a very different feel to it today. They were quietly respectful.

Sure, there will be a baseball game today, but it won’t have that usual feel. Not by a long shot. Both teams will be trying to win, but more than anything, it will be a matter of just wanting the Angels to get through this difficult day and move on.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Angels, their fans and to the families of the three young people whose lives ended much, much too soon. It will be a very difficult game to get through – I know I will keep a box of tissues handy and there will be a lump in my throat. God Bless them all. Rest in Peace Nick.

I was waiting for Brian to bang one out from the lead-off spot…..Some things make a game like baseball seem so small. My prayers are with the Angels…..I’ll be watching on Fox Sports West but I’m thinking the teams will just want to get this game out of the way. Of course….for 3 hours at a time it may be the only escape the Angels get each day for a while. God Bless the Angels…Go Sox.

Nick Adenhart’s family will throw out the first pitch tonight. They are reporting on NESN that it is very somber at the park. Lots of players hugging each other and not being sure what to do.

What’s up with the O’s? They beat Tampa today!

Julia

I don’t see how there is a dry eye in our crowd after seeing that tribute….. GOD BLESS YOU!!, Three so very young people with seemingly their entire lives ahead of them. God Bless their families, friends and The Angels Family.
Nick didnt play the outfield (Angels in the Outfield)but, He’s an Angel on Gods team now!!! PLease God take care of them…..

I hope that Kottaras keeps his head about him tonight.. I think that it could be quite a confidince dumper at times to catch that flutterer!! …..
COME ON TIMMY!!!!!! WAKE, DO IT BABY!!!!!!

Come on, Wake, we need the end of this inning!

Guys, are the comments posting slowly…slowly…slowly tonight? GO SOX!

Good job, Wake! Take it from there! Get him some runs! GO SOX!

Don’t worry Greg. I have a few minutes to comment and it’s been a LONG time since I’ve been able to do this.
Have to say the uniforms looked great. I never liked the gray with red lettering. Looked grim to me.

Come on, Sox, get em home!

I think that maybe a letter from allof us as “Brownie Pointers” to MLB.COM is in order… I will do it if no one minds….

DANG! Good catch!
Hey Dave, how are you doing? I just got on, as you’ve noticed, but just getting a sense of whether the postings are slow tonight! GO SOX!

Heck yeah, Ellen, I’ll sign it! This is what ST was supposed to be for–get rid of this kind of nonsense! GO TRIXIE! GO SOX!

I am getting a little worried about Jerry Remy… never so many days missed. I hope that nothing is seriously wrong (or just plain wrong!!) Good thoughts to our beloved REMDAWG!!!!

Julia, are you still on? You and Ellen need to send some cheers to Wake! ;) GO SOX!

I just don’t have the wooooo-woooooo in me tonight!! (YET)

Because of RemDawg, or Adenhart, or both? I thought this would be a surreal night!

Sox look horrible tonight. Tim is following in the steps of Lester and Dice-K. Starting pitching is struggling — who would have thunk!

Come on, Sox! Let’s go, D! We need to help out Wake!

Seems to be working OK now–let’s see if it lasts!
COME ON, WAKE! NO MORE BASERUNNERS! GO SOX!

FINALLY, A DP! Let’s go Sox! We need some offense now!

My connection is crawling tonight.

Way to go, Jacoby! Keep up the Rally Sox!
Come on, Dustin!

You are right, Dave, I’ve even wondered if it was because Lester was hurt. But the Angels seem to be the ones playing with energy right now. This is how the Sox lost Lester’s game!

Okay…. TRIXIE… HERE!!!!
LET’SGOREDSOXLET’SGO!!! CLAPCLAPCLAP!!!

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO SOXXXXXXXXXXXXXX!!

Yeah, and the postings are stuttering again! COME ON, Big Papi!

What in the hell is that on Peteys face??? It looks like he had superglue on his face, kissed a goats but and came away with the butt hair!!!!!

The Angels announcers (MLB.COM) are about as interesting as a PBS Siberian cooking show. Sox just look so uninspired. Something is wrong here. They just look they’ve already played a long season. Did the Rays take it out of them?

LET’SGO PAPI, LET’SGO. CLAPCLAPCLAP!!!

Are the days of Big Papi gone? Are the glory days of the Red Sox gone? Is this it? Can anyone save the Red Sox? Can the Angel’s announcers be any more boring. Gee…did they do underwater golfing tournaments in their former life.

Nice grab by Hunter.. but Papi got a piece of it.. RBI!!!!

3-1. That’s a little better. Go Youk! GO SOX!

SB! Way to go, Dustin! Come on Youk!

DAVE!!!!! Hey, how’s it going??? Glad that you stopped in!!!! I miss you!

Dave, you’ve seen PBS Siberian cooking shows? Was Arnie the host? ;) Did they do moose or seal?
GO SOX!

The Angels have an extra player tonight!!! I cant begrudge them their 10th man tonight.

Sorry about the double posting. MLB must be using Microsoft ‘s quality assurance integrity software (MQAIS) pronounced (My-qwap-as-is) to guarantee us frustration less game play.
This software came about when Microsoft first started to ensure a consistent crash rate on their software. As Bill Gates used to say “The Interface is everything and you have to hurry sometimes to examine it before it crashes but it’s worth it.”

Ellen — I think of you all the time. It’s great to hear your voice –err — see your typing!

Dave…

Dave, are we going off the deep end already? Hmmm…No, I don’t think the Rays took it out of us. After Game 1, with Beckett, we have played uninspired ball since. The atmosphere in Anaheim (with Adenhart’s death) doesn’t help, seemingly. We’ll get it going, but we are off to a slow start, and already on a West Coast swing. Only the first week. We’ll see. GO SOX!

I don’t know if it is the circumstances under which Adenhart (his girlfriend and his friend) died, the fact that he was so young or what, but this tragedy has really touched something in me… I hear about dui deaths all the time here in south Florida, but when some one with so much potential dies at that age by keys and blatant stupidity of some SCUMBAG who is a repeat offender, it really pisses me off and makes me sad!!! (Later I’ll tell you how i REALLY feel)

Come on, Mike! Let’s get some runs! GO SOX!

I hear you, Ellen, the fact that Adenhart had pitched, and pitched VERY WELL in his first MLB start just hours earlier, and then was killed by a DUI twit! I hope they retire Adenhart’s 34 in some fashion, or give him some other tribute (I like the 34 on the mound tonight! Nice gesture!)
Come on, Wake! No more baserunners! GO SOX!

Come on, Wake, get it done! GO SOX!

Come on, Sox! This is not good D!

The announcer that is in with Orsillo now, is a nice guy. He played for th eBaby Skankees here back then, and I was dating the trainer. I had alot of conversations with.. Had a scholarship to Notre Dame and an offer of 5 figures (in 1979) from teh Yanks… ooh, what to do.. I should have a conundrum such as that!!

That’s better, Wake! Let’s go, Sox O!

Good Job Wake… no runs in!!!! Work it babay!!! Now we needs some hits………………

I was looking forward to hearing RemDawg tonight and this year! I hope he is OK!

Good Job Wake… no runs in!!!! Work it babay!!! Now we needs some hits……………… oh and his bonus was a 6 figure offer

Way to go, Sox, nice hit! GO SOX! Get some runs for Wake!

DP?! Come on, Sox, we need some O!!

I can’t wait til you can be back here more often!!! But I send all my thoughts to you all the time!

You talking about me when I’m unable to login??? Not very nice.
Now your Siberian cooking: it all starts with the finest seal oil and yak butter. Just like French chefs would be lost without their butter and cream, and Italians need their olive oil those Siberians just don’t go far without Yeti grease.

It’s weird when someone you work with dies. Just last month one of our regular delivery guys didn’t show up and we asked the substitute driver if he was on vacation and we found out he had died. Just a few months before retirement. He had never been sick, but he just up and died one night. This old dude was one of those charmingly crusty guys who, after you say “Good morning. Jim” would fill the air with a blue streak of curses and give you a little smile. He was a pain in the rear but always in a good way and he would look out for us to make sure we got the correct goods. I’ll miss the old bast@rd.
My condolences to the Adenhart family. And the Angels.

Sox are struggling this year out of the gate, but it’s a long season and they’ll be there at the end. Don’t despair.

thats freajing enough Wake…. damnit GET THESE SUCKERS OUT!!!!

thats freaking enough Wake…. damnit GET THESE SUCKERS OUT!!!!

Hey Arnie! At least we weren’t trying to talk “behind your back”—rather in plain sight on the computer screen! ;) Login problems also? Par for the course, it seems!
Sounds good! Does the seal oil work well with Yak also, or just with the polar bear? ;) I thought you might have some expertise on this!! ;)

Nice job, Drew, nice throw. We need a DP now, guys! Come on, Wake!

Way to go, Youk! We need one more! Come on Wake!

Arnie,
What about the Siberian-Mex mix (often called the S & M) mix. I hear it’s quite popular now!

ELLEN:
I agree on the death of a player. it’s always hard. I lost my brother-in-law from a self-induced overdose and it still kills me. Drugs and alcohol are just such self-destructive forces in the world.

Greg,
How are you. Good to see you.

No, we just talk behind his Yak!!! and that can get smelly!!!

Way to go, J-Bay! Nice work getting out of the jam, Wake! Now, can we not get into them in the first place, please?? GO SOX!

Have to say, by the way, that MLB has really improved picture quality from last years images which looked like digitally restored 1910 silent films with all that fuzzy feel. They’ve come a long way — actually they switched from Microcrap’s Silverlight to Adobe Flash.

But the Siberians, I hear serve some FANTASTIC frozen drinks!!! Instead of a Patron Silver Margarita, it’s a Cuervo with yak butter-nutter!!!

David Ortiz needs to start hitting. He’s really got to start swinging the bat.

Siber-Mex, Dave, is that chili-infused seal oil?! Yeah, we just had to yak, yak, yak away about our resident chef!

Siber-Mex can be mail ordered freeze dried including seal chocolate mouse friend ice cream and polar bear tacos with delicious tusk juice — mmm, mmm. Why go outside your Igloo when you can enjoy a nice cup of Frozen cabbage Burritto

Yeah, he was in ST Dave, so I would hope it would carry into the regular season! Let’s see if he can get his bat going! Tek sure has been showing some power! GO SOX!

Let’s not forget Ellen the nutter, butter flubber Taco mix. Take a run for the artic!

MMMM…TASTY DAVE! Do they serve it at the ballpark!

Dave, how y’all been doin’ way up there in Nashville? Ya bin feastin’ on some hog jowls, collard greens and pimento cheese lately? Grits, pork trotters and black eyed peas?
Hope all is well with you.

Arnie,
Despite the stereotypes the only southern food I’ve found in Nashville is grits and collard greens. Actually Collard greens aren’t bad and they are healthy for you. Two chocolate bars after wards to kill the taste is also especially helpful.

Nutter butter taco mix? Isn’t that what you’ve been serving Lugo during his rehab, getting his power numbers up? ;)

Is there a RedSox fan in alignment with the mound that can start shooting spitballs (with a straw) at Weaver???? Well, then do it!!!!!
IDOBELIEVEIDOBELIEVEIDOIDOIDOIDOBELIEVE!!!!
LET’SGOREDSOXLET’SGO!!!CLAPCLAPCLAP!!!

Greg,
You can go to S&MGrocery.com to get all you get all your favorite Siberian Mexican mixes. They say it’s the dominate food for your dudgeon of a stomach.

WAY TO GO MIKE! WAY TO FLASH THE LEATHER!
I’m reading Mike’s book right now, Ellen! Thanks! :)

Good inning for Wake… Now (the)Master(son) of teh Universe is up throwing in the pen!!! Come on Sox!!

I’ll look into it, Dave! (or is that Inuit?) ;) Do they do mail order deliveries? ;)

Greg,
They do do mail order or you can join them on a hunt and eat it fresh. It’s really up to you and your insanity level.

FYI
Rumor has it that Jerry is having back problems but I can’t get much info.

Weaver is doing well. He’s another pitcher who is either in a zone, or is TOTALLY OFF. He’s got it working tonight.
Masterful Masterson, let’s go!

Okay, someone needs to hit a soft(?)liner right into Weavers groin area!!!!

I know… that’s mean.. sorry…

Ellen,
This could be a THREE GAME LOSING STREAK and after tomorrow it could be four games. Maybe the Sox DO need some S & M food from the Dominatrix Intuits

Oh don’t tell me only the insane are the ones going to these Inuit tourist traps!
WAY TO GO MIKE! Come on, Lowrie, get it done! Tying run on base!
Good night for Weaver.

Can’t stay awake. Going to bed. Night everyone! Love ya guys!
Ellen — remove all corded phones from your house if the Sox lose tonight.

Yeah, Ellen, low blow (!), but too late, Weaver’s gone.

Come on Uncle Jed, Ellie needs a HR!!!!!

Come on, Jed! Need to give Lowell some backup also! Get it done! GO SOX!

Can’t stay awake. Going to bed. Night everyone! Love ya guys!
Ellen — remove all corded phones from your house if the Sox lose tonight.

SNARL! Come on, guys!

Come on Masterful! Let’s go Sox!

TWO stolen bases by BOBBY (I EAT ALOT) ABREAU!!! I bet thats a first for him!!

Kottaras doesn’t seem to be any better than Tek (yet) at throwing SB runners out. I hope he develops that part of his game!

Not good! Let’s go Sox!

Come on Masterson! Let’s get the inning over!

Two outs, now. Let’s get the final out, Justin! GO SOX! Let’s get the offense going!

IBB. Let’s get the DP, Sox!

Sox are just plain struggling right now, can’t pitch, can’t hit. They need some Gatorade. Or maybe some prune juice would give them a nice tune-up. Something, anything.

Come on, Dustin! Nice hit, Jacoby! GO SOX!

Way to go Dustin! Nice 2B!
You are right, Arnie. They do need a jump start. Maybe this rally will help. GO SOX!

Come on, Lopez, finish this inning!
2 runs last inning. PROGRESS!

Nice catch JD! Good work Lopez! GO SOX! Another rally, please!

Well, that’s that. Disappointing game. Night, all.

To put it bluntly, this team sucks right now. Makes me want to turn Sox and Pinstripes into a site that solely focused on the farm system.

Jeff
http://www.soxandpinstripes.com

well i rarely hit the panic button…especially this early…so im ok ….the bats will heat up and all will be well….BUT….yes im again questioning our fearless leader….some extremely weird non managerial moves have been missed…that being said its also the managesrs job to throw in some spark to get the team goin….tito has had plenty of opps to go out and yell at an umpire on the strike zone in key times….gee if you dont wanna get booted then send mags….ok now nail me for bad mouthin tito…..judge

Mornin’ All, from Anaheim. We’re in L.A. visiting family for Easter, thought we’d catch a game or two. Will be at the park shortly. Listen, the last time we were here in the Fall, the place was ELECTRIC as the fans/players were geared up for a post-season run, which was derailed by the Sox. This time, the tragedy that took place really has left a somber mood around the stadium. It was soooo depressing. Even Angel fans, who are quite animated, were respectful of my family, all decked head-to-toe in Sox gear. No jabs, nada. Just nods and knowing looks. Wow, what a shame. Heckuva pitcher that kid was.

As for the game? We look FLAT!!! Can’t believe a team with this much potential is mopping the floor in the AL East basement right now. Not much pop in the bats and the only guys playing with energy are Youk, Jacoby and Pedroia. WAKE UP GUYS!!!! Let’s make a run for it before we fall too far back.

Happy Easter, Nation!

This crap has to stop…. AND I MEAN NOW!!!!!! Whatever it is thats keeping the bats silent and making our mound guys look like batting prActice pitcher, they just need to GET OVER IT!@!!!!!!! New day, new game.. blank slate (minus 3 games in the L column)…. Time to pullit together and play ball like the RedSox know how to play ball!!!! Tito needs to have some pitcher batter butt sandwiches for lunch today (give them a real butt chewing).
LET’S GO REDSOX…

That’s great timing on your part Jim.. You should hang out long enough to run up the coast and catch them a Oakland,,,, I would love to travel and see the boys play!!

Judge, there are some things that Tito can do differently, and I would like to see him rearrange the lineup myself. But this team needs a jumpstart, and even if Tito were to do it, I think he is not the one who would get the message across effetively. This is not because of a knock on Tito, but this is something the players have to collectively decide this will no longer be acceptable. When the team was down to the Yankees in 04, and about to get shown the door, Big Papi gave the team a verbal assault that woke the team from its slumber. In 07, a similar thing happened. In both cases, it was the players who did so, and they never lost another game either time. Something similar is needed here, because this team needs to wake up. IT’S REGULAR SEASON, GUYS! LET’S GO!

Hey, Jim, how are ya! Good to see you on the blog again! Take care. GO SOX!

Can’t…get..caputer…to…post…anything…BEEP!
As I was attempting to say earlier (let’s see if it goes through this time!): Of course, I don’t mean to say that if a player in the clubhouse throws a tantrum, we’ll never lose another game. I would hope, however, even given jetlag and the unusual circumstances last night, that a leader on the team will step up and give this team a talking-to wake-up call. The team looks flat, and it can’t continue. GO SOX! ITS REGULAR SEASON! WAKE UP!

I already don’t like the announcers on FOX!!!! Give me NESN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
