Put away your magnifying glass

It was almost as if manager Terry Francona was foreshadowing the early bump in the road his team would encounter when last Sunday at Fenway he spoke of how everything gets magnified early in the season.

Here the Red Sox are, stumbling over their first four games, losing three of them. Only Kevin Youkilis has come out of the gate thriving.

But there are clearly no reasons to panic. This roster remains stacked and it’s just a matter of guys setting into their grooves.

Obviously, today is an important day with Brad Penny making his Red Sox debut. Penny should be a crucial piece of this rotation and perhaps ond of the best bargains in baseball if things go as the Red Sox hope.

Ian, can you let the powers that be know how bad this is getting??? It took me 45 minutes to sign in and another 12 to post. Now here it goes again… it’s thinking while I’m writing. I’ll keep writing while it’s thinking and see how much I can write.
The Sox have to really start pulling this together or the Nationals will have a better record than us soon.,, Something seems to be up with Ortiz. His swing seems a lot different than past years, almost as if he’s not at full power.

Ellen – I had put out a PSA about this – they are aware of the problems but MLB.TV is having issues also – So guess which one they are fixing first???

What a waste! Come on guys – let’s get this season moving!

Does it seem to anyone else that they look lack-luster?? Almost like sleepwalking through tthe games.

Yes – there is no punch to anything that they are doing.

Easier inning, this one.. Penny seems to be settling in..
Have we found our Lucky Penny????? (lame, I know)

I just figured out what is going on!!! its been so long since we’ve been in the basement, we need to be reminded what it feels like so we can appreciate it more when we get back on top!!!!!

Oh, and my four legged children!!

FINALLY, A WIN! YES!
The offense finally came to life! YAY! Lowell’s blast, and 2 by J-Bay! Just what the doctor ordered! Keep it up!
Penny didn’t look earth-shattering but he did keep us in the game. Our defense finally looked steadier. (GOOD!) Ramon Ramirez was a STUD! Way to go!
Pap was mystifying today. Got the out to finish the 8th, then needed nearly 40 pitches in the 9th! (And the HR, to boot! Sure made life interesting!)
But the offense finally woke up. If we can keep it up, get guys on base before the XBH, that will be great. We got a good start on that today. I hope we can keep it up!
Game was blacked out in our area on MLBTV, so watched on FOX. Nice start for Penny. I hope Josh’s pitching tomorrow keeps the momentum going! GO SOX!

What are the 4-legged children Ellen? Dogs and cats? Or gators? ;)

Oh hell no, no GATORS in this University of Miami house!!! lol 1 dog (Boe, my maiden name is HandiBOE) and 1 cat. Roofus (she was living IN my roof for a month or so before I knew she was there, my husband saw her but didnt tell me he was feeding her!!) These are my four legged furry children!!!

Well, I had my food purveyor ship 50 cases of #10 cans of stewed prunes to the Sox visitor’s clubhouse. That should get them moving!

Tomorrow they get to .500 and from there it’s all the way. Go Josh. Go Sox!!! Go Jason Bay!! And anyone else I may have forgotten.

No dogs here, Ellen, 4 cats. No Gators eh? GOOD! Not much of a fan of “THE U!” either. Outside of my alma mater (Marquette Golden Eagles), gimme the Tar Heels!

Happy Birthday Tek! Keep up the hitting! GO SOX!

Happy Birthday Tek! Keep up the good hitting! GO SOX!

Happy Birthday Tek! Keep up the good hitting! GO SOX!

At least Tek is hitting the ball hard….even when he makes an out…..Paps was a little off today….had a lot of batters 0-2 and did not put them away…I was impressed by Penny….Tito did a great job today…..managed the pitching staff brilliantly. I just had to add that!!!!!!!!

Hi all! Nice day here in Anaheim. A WHOLE LOT nicer and a bit more relaxed than last night. The boys looked good in their comeback win. Liked the retro road unis too! Bay and Mikey bangin’ away! My son is one tired but happy camper! That last inning was really draining, with Kendrick and Pap going at it. Too bad we won’t be out there tomorrow.

Just sitting here in the hotel room fixing to book tickets for July 20-22 in Arlington and check this out, Nation! All the Texas Ranger/Six Flags Specials (combos where you can save a buck) are good for most every game in Arlington except for…. you guessed it! July 20-22 and Aug. 14-16! Hmmmm….. does the Nation travel well or what! Seems that Arlington isn’t the only place we’ve experienced this. We had good seats and accommodations here in CA. but that was because of my sis. Otherwise, we’d have been in not-so good spots on short-notice planning. Over 40k in attendance today!

So, when you decide to hit the road with the Sox, you’d better plan early. And bring your wallet, because everyone’s waitin’ on Sox fans to drop some Benjamins! Oh, and if you haven’t already done any price comparisons, check out the ticket prices around the league. There’s a noticeable difference in ticket expense when the Sox are in town vs. say…the Royals. And the Nation WAS in attendance here today! Great to hear such a rousing rendition of “LET’S GO RED SOX!” I think my wife lost her voice.

Keep up the cheers! They just might wake up the rest of the bats! I think I heard Ellen screaming from down South FLA. way….. nite!

P.S. I haven’t said it yet, but R.I.P. Nick.

It’s a real pain in the **** trying to post on this blog. It takes forever to sign in. I’ve been here a couple of times and haven’t been able to get in at all. Then, once I do get on, the page refreshes on its own right in the middle of my posting…… OK, enough complaining.

Good game on Saturday. Penny looked pretty good and Papelbone made a gutsy save. I don’t know how Hunter hit that pitch out of the park. He really tomahawked it. The pitch was exactly where Tek called for it to be. Pap was a little unlucky on that one. I also thought he made a decent pitch on the double that followed. It was down and in. I liked how he went after the last hitter. It was a great battle.

The bats haven’t begun to gel yet, but that will happen. Pitching has been pretty good so far. Look forward to watching Beckett again later today.

Well, if I can get on during the game, see you then.

I have to tell everyone what I woke to this morning…
I walked into the dining room and there on the table sat an Easter Basket in the shape of a baseball and inside were all sorts of RedSox gifts.. a pen, a pewter beer coolie with the Sox emlem.. litle plastic baseballs with jeely beans and chocolat candy… I think I’ve got a wonderful husband!!!!!
(oh and Judge will like this: when you squeeze the handle of the basket, it says “PLAY BALL” and plays “take me out to the ballgame”…. VERY COOL!!!

Oh I was so excited I forgot to say Happy Easter to you all and your families!!!!!!

I?ve not been a fan of trading for a player who hurts you seemingly every time he plays against you. While I cannot remember the incidents, I believe the Sox have done it without the intended consequences resulting. However, Mike Napoli may well be the exception to the rule. While at 27 Napoli?s a bit older than some of the other young catchers that have been discussed as possible acquisitions for the Red Sox (Salty ? soon to turn 24, Taylor Teegarden age 24, Max Ramirez, age 24, Miguel Montero age 25) his three (3) seasons in the majors have only been ?half seasons? in that he has only caught approximately half of the games throughout the year. Yet in that limited time, he has demonstrated real hitting ability. Last year, in 227 plate appearances, he rocked 20 dingers and knocked in 49 runs. He has to have 5-6 solid years remaining in the ?bigs?.

Beyond that, Napoli has served under the tutelage of former big league catcher and outstanding manager Mike Scioscia. With Kelvim Escobar, Ervin Santana and John Lackey on the Disabled List, with Lackey publicly pouting about his contract negotiations, and with the tragic death of Nick Adenhart, the Angels need what they have always had in great abundance: pitching, particularly having lost Mark Teixeira and Garret Anderson over the off-season. Currently, their website depth chart only shows four (4) starters as they head into a run of 25 games in 27 days. Notwithstanding the fact that the Angels have two catchers not with the big club who remain on their 40-man roster (Ryan Budde and Bobby Wilson) the Sox could offer them one of the Sox catchers, in addition to some starting pitching.

Now perhaps the Angels would not part with Napoli without getting Clay Buchholz or even Jon Lester in return. Obviously, I would not make either of those deals. I also don?t think I would part with Junichi Tazawa to get Napoli in return, though that would be a harder call for me. However, the Sox have other pitchers who could be offered and might well be ?major league ready.? Certainly, I would consider trading Mike Bowden or Devern Hansack. I might well consider offering Brady Penny, Nick Hagadone, Felix Doubront, Charlie Zink or Stolmy Pimental, although the Angels might not see the latter four as ?major league ready.? Does anyone know if the Sox have the latitude to trade Penny? They typically do not grant ?no-trade? contract provisions, and he is in his first year with a new team. While its tragic that unfortunate circumstances may have opened this opportunity up, especially with the Sox in Anaheim, I hope they recognize what is available to them and at least explore the options.

D. Benjamin…

I was watching some of the game yesterday and Napoli goes deep. I thought too myself, he seems too hit the longball against Boston quite a bit. I don’t know what the numbers say but Naploli likes Boston pitching.

Penny was good from what I saw. Ramirez gets people out and that is all you can ask for. I love his stuff. His impact on the Sox pen might be like the impact Oki had in 2007. Here’s hoping.

Bay playing longball, when will he be signed? I would love too see a 3 yr deal soon. Then again if he is gone at the end of the season, Boston would get 2 picks for him.

I’m guessing Varitek will lead baseball with 75 H.R.’s. What do you think?

Great day for Jason Bay (I’m a poet, and I didn’t eveen know it!!lol) The brain trust really needs to lock him up.
When we win today, we’ll be at 500… then the sky’s the limit!!!

Nice catch by JBay!!!!! OOOOOWEEE!!!

Looks like this is the game to be at!!! Never a dull moment!
Hey, Can’t we all just get along??? lol
I dont think that was an intentional at the head throw, I think Beckett was trying to hold up after time was called late!

That kind of put an exclamation point on the conversation!!!!! Way to slam it YOUK!!!… and WAY TO GO JD!!!!!!!

Geez, took me 20 minutes to get signed in. That was a very dangerous moment between Beckett and Abreu. I don’t fault Beckett. He had already started his motion toward the plate when time was called or at the very worst, he called time at the same time Beckett started. It was very close. Keep in mind, Beckett isn’t listening for someone to call timeout. He’s honed in on Tek and making the pitch. He was obviously disrupted and lost the ball. I don’t believe for a second there was any intent to throw at Abreu there. What makes it very dangerous, is that Abreu gets time called and moves back and relaxes. There’s no way he can react if the ball is at him…….. and that’s why he was so upset. It probably scared the crap out of him. I’m surprised Remy took the position he did. He should have seen what happened. Been there, done that. It’s just as scary for a pitcher to lose a ball like that.

…and who’s next.. come on JBAY another one for me, ok???

Hey Garry, Happy Easter, these uniforms seem to be good luck so far!!!
and yes, this server STILL SUCKS!!

There’s no way Beckett was throwing at Abreu. He just lost the pitch. What the umpire did there creates a very dangerous situation. He gave Abreu time just as Beckett started his motion. Beckett’s honed in on making the pitch. He’s not listening for timeout or watching the umpire. He just completely lost the ball. Very dangerous for Abreu who got time, stepped back and was relaxed. He could really have gotten pasted which is why he was upset. I don’t blame him. That was an instance of everything going exactly wrong which is when people get hurt, and everyone gets upset.

Took me 20 minutes to get signed on, and this is my third try at a posting.

I know, I said earlier that Backett was in motion and that he looked like he was trying to hold up and it just FLEW!!!
Wow,,Torri Hunter is 5-11 against Beckett lifetime.. not good to get yourself thrown out of the game jawing at the umpire when youve got that kind of stat!

Uh, oh! Posting delay. Happy Easter to you too Ellen. I hope the new uniforms are good luck, because they sure are ugly.

I like them… a little bit of Retro never hurt anyone, lol!!!
A hit for Green in his 1st start!!! Good going Nick!

I like them… a little bit of Retro never hurt anyone, lol!!!
A hit for Green in his 1st start!!! Good going Nick! and the Angels don’t like us anyway, since we keep shutting them down in the playoffs!!! Where’s Slackey Yackey Lackey, is he on the DL?

Does it seem to you that Papi is just swinging at ANYTHING???

2 hits for Nick Green….NICE DEBUT!!!

Papi doesn’t look very good. I’m thinking his best days are behind him.

I can’t believe Ellsbury got thrown out on the deflected ground ball. I would have thought he would beat that out easily. He did hit the ball hard though.

I’m sad to think that as well… I also think that maybe he needs to be dropped down in the order.. 6th maybe???
time for a little RANT!!
what the hell is going on here???? Do you guys think that you can just sit back and rest on your laurels??? NOT!!! BIG TIME NOT!!!
LIKE I SAID YESTERDAY, GET OFF YOUR VERY HIGHLY PAID BUTTS AND GET THIS GAME GOING AGAIN!!! PAPI, BE MORE SELECTIVE.. YOU TOO DUSTIN,, . STAND AT THE PLATE AND SELECT LIKE YOU DIDI LAST YEAR AND THE YEAR BEFORE… OH, AND GO BACK TO THE 5 O’CLOCK SHADOW ON YOUR CHOPS, LEAVE THE GOAT BUTT TO YOUK!!!
sorry you guys but i dont care how many times this posts, as long as it posts… Pedey got a hit after i wrote it/
YES… A BREAK FOR US,!!!
I’m still writing after I hit submit so I dont know what will happen but now we are run closer!!!!

happy day after your Birthday V-Tek!!!!!

The most basic of baseball plays, a bunt, and a major league player can’t execute. Very disgusting.

Hey, its his 1st start, nerves have to be involved in there somewhere… look at Papi trying to steal earlier.. missed a sign (ya think)… gotta give the rookie a little leeway.

new thread

What was Mike Lowell thinking? The bases are loaded with one out, a pitcher who can’t find the strike zone and Mike is ahead in the count 2-0! It baffles me why he would be swinging away at the third pitch! Things like that make me crazy. We’ll get it together in Oakland. Go Sox.
