Clouds over Fenway

Sitting in my seat here in the Fenway Park press box, there are big clouds engulfing the entire playing field and that is fitting on a day like this.

A New York Times report came out roughly one hour before game-time that David Ortiz was on the list of 104 players who tested positive in survey testing for performance-enhancing drugs back in 2003. Manny Ramirez was also on that list, but he of course was suspended for use of a banned substance earlier this season.

In Boston, the story is Ortiz, who has been one of the most beloved players in franchise history, something that was never more evident then when he was in his two-month slump earlier this season. Remember, this is a man who was endeared enough to get curtain calls for the first four home runs he hit this season.

But where will it go from here? What will Ortiz say after the game?

In his first at-bat today, he cracked a double on the very first pitch he saw. The crowd applause was pretty indifferent when he stepped up for his first at-bat. It was almost like they didn’t know whether to cheer or boo, so it was just kind of like, what I would call, a polite applause.

On his first day of Spring Training this year, David was very outspoken about the whole issue of steroids in baseball. He was disappointed that his friend Alex Rodriguez’s name came out from what was supposed to be an anonymous test in ’03, when there was not yet penalties for positive tests of PEDs.

Ortiz urged people to get away from the past and move forward, and suggested that anyone who tests positive in MLB’s testing program should be suspended for an entire season.

“I would suggest that everybody get tested, and not randomly,” Ortiz said on Feb. 16. “You go team by team and you test everybody, three, four times a year, and that’s about it. You do what you’ve got to do … ban them for the whole year [if they test positive]. You’re going to get respect from the players when they know they’re going to get tested. Let’s test the whole team, three or four times a year. I know they can do that. Believe me, if someone was using steroids, it would show up. Because the way they test you, it’s not a joke.”

How about past users, before the testing program was in effect?

“There’s been a lot of players who have been in federal court and being judged like they just killed somebody or they robbed somebody,” Ortiz also said on Feb. 16. “I don’t think all that is supposed to be happening. If you admitted that you’ve used stuff [in the past], boom, don’t use it anymore. It’s not good for you. You know it’s not good for the game. Let’s move on, you know what I mean? All the drama of bringing guys to court and acting like they are serious criminals, it doesn’t look good for the game. What is happening right now is about something that happened in the past. It’s not something that is happening right now. Everything was banned in, what, 2004?”

Anyway, more later.

It is indeed a very sad day in the Fens. This definitely takes some lustre off the Paul Bunyan-esque Ortiz. When…not if …but when …the other 97 names are “leaked” out, one would hope it happens quickly. Baseball really doesn’t need this “dying a thousand deaths” and to have it just get it over in one fell swoop. If I were one of the 97, it would behoove me either to come clean now. If not, at least, don’t paint a bigger target on your back by being an outspoken critic about PED use.

A very methaporic title for this thread.

Hi all. Just checking in. Jon Lester is again pitching well but getting no help from the bats so far! Depressing news about David Ortiz but I must admit that I am not surprised. We have to play over that situation however. GO SOX.

Ellsbury was picked off at 1B on a leadoff single. The Sox hitters make A’s pitcher with ERA over 7 looks like Cy Young. The Sox pitcher with ERA over 7 will be knocked out of the mound in 3 innings. Unbelievable.

This game is rapidly getting out of control. Lester appears to have lost it and the bats are still in quarantine!

Lester out, Delcarman in. 4-1 Oakland. Call Theo to hold the deal. It won’t make any difference this year. Get rid of the bums and rebuild for next year.

Tough day for sox fans – tough day for baseball as a whole. can’t believe one of your comments wants the team to rebuild? You guys will get past this little streak and get back in the race, I am sure.

Really tough time for the Sox. Check this heartwrenching story out about Dustin Pedroia’s brother.

Well…that was depressing. Then again so are the Sox. This is not a streak, this is a nosedive. Nobody has anything to contribute anymore as a team. They are becoming individuals desperate to do something. Ug!
.
Dave…

A little life in that inning and where there is life, there is hope! GO SOX.

Did anyone really expect that Ortiz was not on that list, or hadn’t used performance enhancing drugs at some point? I though it all along and saw it as a huge reason for his serious decling in production over the past couple of years. It should be interesting to hear what he has to say. I now think they should make the entire list public. This leaking crap out a little at a time is ridiculous. This is really too bad because Ortiz has been such a big part of the Red Sox Nation phenomenon over the past five years. I’m watching him hit right now wondering what must be going through his head. Papi has been good for Boston and for the Sox, and if all this crap does turn out to be true, I don’t think it should diminish what he has brought to us. Far be it from me to judge anyone which is why I never blasted A-Rod, Zazu or any of those guys. Having been close to that areana, if I were in their position, I’m honestly not sure what I would do. I’ve never put an illegal substance in my body (however, there are some legal substances in which I may have overindulged a time or two), but if I was playing baseball, and I was doing something that really was an aceepted way of doing things at the time, I’m not sure I’d say no.

The Sox are floundering badly. They come out of the All Star break with a 3 game lead and a very favorable schedule to start off with. They have been unable to beat the teams they should be beating. If they don’t get it together pretty quickly, they could play themselves right out of the post season on this next road trip. It’s not like one or two players are dragging them down. Excepting Ellsbury, Pedroia and Lowell, they have been bad across the board on offense. There is a gaping hole in the middle of the order with Bay and Ortiz. At least one of those guys has got to hit for the Sox to be successful.

The starting rotation all of a sudden appears shaky with Penny and Smoltz as the 4-5 guys and Buchholz being an unknown commodity at this point. You’re looking at 3 of the 5 starters who are lucky to give you five innings. The bullpen had a bad game the other night, but I think it remains strong, although I feel Pap is shaky as a closer. It may be that Bard is the closer of the future.

It’s amazing that the Sox are 8-0 with the Yankees and will be 4 games behind if they go on to lose this game. How can that happen?

Sigh! Varitek just can’t throw out anyone at any base! More runs for the A’s.

I agree Matt that the RedSox will rebound from their slump and get back in the race… The best thing about a blog is you always don’t have to agree… I heard on the radio earlier that it’s a tough day for RedSox fans and for RedSox Nation, I couldn’t disagree more…The RedSox fanbase and RedSox Nation aren’t juicers and cheaters, the cheaters were a select few of players who wanted an edge… I myself don’t know many 3y/o kids or 90 y/o grandparents roiding it up and heading to the gym…On the same note this happened in 03 before the current list of banned items came out, it doesn’t make it right by any means but for the 100+ players out of 800 in the MLB that year its a black eye for them, I have no reason to hang my head I’m just the guy who loves the game… Sorry for my rant… Tom

I have been sacarstic saying get rid of the bums and rebuilding. If the Sox can come back and win this game, it will a tremendous boost to the team and the kind of uplift to get over the hump.
Argh, the A’s scored another run in the 7. Down by 2 runs. Still possible.

It could a big inning for the Sox if Pedey didn’t gidp.

Big Papi homered!!!!!! 6-5 Boston.

Please God, don’t let the A’s score again.

With all the crap he is going to have to face after this game, Papi comes through in the clutch. You have to admire his ability to concentrate under tough circumstances.

Danny boy, please prove me right. You are indispensable and untouchable. Go Sox.

By the way Tom, I agree with you. Until 2003, roiding up was an accepted way to do things in MLB. It was accepted by the owners, players and the fans. It should also be noted that 104 players tested positive, but that doesn’t mean that only 104 players were using in 2003. My guess is that there were many more.

Papi 3 run blast I think all is forgiven, for today anyway

I think Ortiz was saying something with that HR. He is still a lying if the news is true. It kills me – he is capable so why the drugs??

Guys, do you want Danny or Big Mouth to pitch the 9th?

Danny! PLEASE!!!!!

And can I still LOVE Tek???? Our Captain!!!

With 3 run lead, I will let Big Mouth pitch and Green is out of the game. lol.

I’m sure there were more Garry… My meaning was people were saying we should hang our heads my belief was, sure I’m mad cause we pay a portion of their salary, but I’m a Sox fan like my father and his father alot of us were here through the hard times and I myself wont let what a few did take away the feelings I had in 04 & 07 especially after 67(which I only barely remember, 75 Ed Armbrister’s bunt, Fisk’s homer… 86 Buckner’s oops and so on….I’ve laughed at them, cried over them but 04 & 07 isn’t any less special because of what a few did in 03… Someone else get up on this soap box lol… Am I wrong???

Tom

Julia, the drugs make a good hitter a great hitter. Ortiz was a good hitter. He became something special when he came to Boston. Was that because of roids? Who knows? Barry Bonds was destined to be a Hall of Famer….. with drugs he became Superman. They just make people more competitive.

I think is someone tells me Wally is a roid Monster I may give up on baseball lol

Big, I mean Pap don’t blow it. 2 outs to go.

Hell no Tom, you’re not wrong. I remember all those times and more (since I’m probably older than you are). I feel the same way. Nothing is going to diminish the feeling I had, especially in 2004. 2007 was like icing on the cake to me. It was great, but not like 2004 when I cried like a baby after the Sox won.

Theeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Red Sox win!

Garry – nothing will change how I feel about the ’04 & ’07 teams – and I too remember Fisk’s HR. But here is my problem:

1. He lied – out and out lied. No misunderstood words, no taken out of context.

2. I am the mom of teen-aged boys – how do I tell them that cheating, taking short cuts, using drugs/roids/PEDs are wrong IF I say “it’s okay – because it made them play better” about the players who used?

I HAVE to be a mom first and a baseball fan second in these situations. We parents live by example – I really believe that – and I can not blow this one – the consequences are TOO great.

Great win boys! Now let’s go get them O’s.

I guess we’ll know more now the game is over and I’m sure the questions will come… I like everyone else would rather hear it from his lips, not Boras not the RedSox…It’s up to Ortiz to explain himself now… If he did it own up to it, there is nothing that can be done to him now… He has to live with it

Tito is on TV now and he looks like a broken man. I feel terrible for him.

Very difficult days for the Sox right now. Cmon folks, let’s circle the wagons and stand behind our team!!

I’ve changed my mind three times regarding the steroid issue. At first, in the early 90’s, if I recall correctly, maybe late 80’s, I thought what’s the big deal, steroids are not against the rules in baseball. Then, when McGuire, Sosa and Bonds started hitting home runs using broom handles and fly swatters I thought maybe these guys are over-doing the ‘roids just a tad. Lately I heard an interview with Johnny Bench and he said that if your trainer or teammate gives you a new vitamin or herb or whatever that will help you run faster and feel stronger you take it. At least in his day you did, and up until the early 2000’s it was like that.
Also, I have done plenty of illegal self-medicating, so who am I to judge? One of my bosses in the 70’s had a bottle of white crosses that he kept in case we had been partying all night. They worked!!
When there are millions of dollars at stake, people will bend the rules as far as they can.
So I’ve decided that I am no one to judge. Shine on David Ortiz!! I’ll back you up!

Tito says that Ortiz will talk and address this directly.

Great comeback! Kudos to Big Papi. Must have been tough to be concentrating on anything other than the steroid issue. Paps managed to avoid giving us another headache today. And last but not least, Julia, you have had a low profile today. Now we can face the Orioles with more enthusiasm. Bye.

In a statement read on the news – David Ortiz is checking with the players union – he says he doesn’t know what it is that he tested positive for – he says once he finds out what it is he will meet with the media and addresses it. He says he will be honest and forthcoming once he has all the answers.

Julia, it’s a tough situation for you. But having been a player, this is how I feel and I sort of addressed it earlier. Performance enhancing drugs have always been an accepted way of doing business in professional baseball. They weren’t just limited to steroids and those kinds of things. In my day, they were often referred to as greenies and they were amphetamines to give players a boost. I can honestly say I never took them, but they were readily available in the clubhouse, even in Class A ball. Because those kinds of things have been accepted in baseball until very recently, I don’t view guys who used them as cheaters. It was a way of gaining an advantage or an edge. Baseball changes as the time and circumstances dictate. In today’s game, performance enhancing and other illegal drugs have been banned. Players who use them today put their careers in jeopardy. That wasn’t the case not too long ago. Everybody knew what was going on…… owners and other management, players and fans and they all accepted and even encouraged it. Was there ever a more exciting time in baseball than the year McGwire and Sosa went at it? People loved it, even though most knew it was a drug enhanced product. Barry Bonds has been chastised, but all he “allegedly” did was what everyone else was doing. We the fans, management, and MLB are at least as responsible for what has happened as the players who did the stuff. The part about Papi lying, well that’s a different story. He has to deal with that. We’ll see how that all turns out.

With all that said, I’m with you Arnie. Somewhere in the Bible I think it says, “Let he who is without sin, cast the first stone.” I’m here to tell you, I’m not that person. I’m in no position to judge anyone. So as you say Arnie, “Shine on Papi, I’ve got your back.”

If the Sox lost, it would make the sad day more agonizing.
All Big Papi has to do is simply come out telling the truth and aplogize to the Red Sox and the fans. The fans will forgive him and is forgiven at least today.

Garry – I am not casting stones – my Nana told me that the only perfect people were those living in heaven – and I will always love my team – but as a parent I have to “pick my battles” and this is one I have to pick.

PAPI is ON TV NOW –

He says he has no information right now. Once he finds out what it is that he tested positive for he will meet again with the media. He thanks all the fans and he promises to get to the bottom of this. Dan Roche asked if he was hurt and he says he is okay. He looks stunned and confused.

On a better note, today’s win was a real show of character for both David Ortiz, and for the Sox. I used the term “floundering” in an earlier post, and they have certainly been doing that. But they came back from certain defeat today in a great win. They really needed this game to set them up for a very tough upcoming road trip. I think this road trip determines whether they are contenders or pretenders. Things would look a lot brighter if they could somehow land Doc Halladay.

Julia,
First the article does not specify the drugs that were used and the details are extremely sketchy. It’s very frustrating when these accusations come out without data and details to back them. This is today’s media — get the story not the facts it seems.

Great post game statements by both David Ortiz and Terry Francona. I hope he does this right.

This whole 2003 drug thing has been handled very poorly. To me, it’s beyond belief that the information from those tests even exists today, or that it ever existed. That was supposed to be a completely anonymous test for statistical purposes only. It was not intended to identify players and there is no way any sample should be identifable to a player. It’s crap, and the players are getting screwed. I hope the players union sticks this directly up the arses of MLB.

Having said that, if it is true, it is not surprising. I suspected something when David said that while Barry Bonds may have taken drugs, nobody else is hitting his home run count.
If I had to blame anyone, it would be MLB> They knew the problem and ignored it. They did it because steroid enhanced players brought in big bucks and teams were heavily invested in these players.
Unfortunately the players are people you live with day after day and when you want to play the game hard enough you do what you need to do or your career is over. They’re is no sympathy here. How many times do I read about ‘dump’ this guy or ‘dump’ that guy. It doesn’t take much. That’s hard. It’s hard to give up. I’m not justifying the mentality, just trying to understand it.
In the end, as a parent myself, I’d completely discourage my children from doing that in male sports (easier since they’re girls) but in the end, they’ll have to make that decision for themselves because wouldn’t be able to watch them. I would just hope that they would make the right decision and live with the consequences vs. destroying their bodies with these deadly substances.

ok this is my take on the steroids era and the plrs who did it…alot of ppl in life do things that arent exactly legal or moral to get ahead….im in no way supporting the users of roids but we are overlooking a major factor in all of this scenario….the owners and managers of teams had toknow what was goin on….i would call any a liar who says they didnt….at the time the test was givin they werent illegal correct?…..the players who took them put alot of butts instands and who knows how much money from play off births and so on….no one is blamin management….the thing that irks me most in the entire deal is that players who adamently say they dint…did….if it were me….i would say yes i did it to enhance my play and get an edge….i know it was bad for my body but it wasnt illegal or banned at the time….i had a chance to make alot of money for my family by greatly enhancing my permormance….or somethin to that affect….if it made a 3-4mill dollar plr into a 15 mill dollar plr….would you?…..i blame the league and management for not puttin a stop to it sooner….but why would they?…they made alot of money also….so shame on them all….u2 commish…..maybe we should give you a lifetime ban for not reacting sooner….you knew and were more worried about building the game back up after the strike era…..just somethin to think on….incase you didnt notice i was diggin at pete rose….to me there was never a player who pld with more passion and grit….i swear he woulda played for free….he should be in the hall…period….judge

Julia, your Nana is a wise person. So pick your battles, and tell your children what Papi did was wrong. If he in fact did test positive for something and he knowingly lied about it, you and I both know he was wrong. But maybe this is a good time to teach them about forgiveness, because David Ortiz has given of himself like most other players haven’t and won’t. Other than those things, it seems like he has brought a lot to Boston, the Red Sox, and children in particular.

Garry – I can forgive – and a lot will depend on what it is that he took and how. What A-Rod and Manny got caught doing? They knew what they were doing was wrong. But others – was it a guy from the Phillies (can’t remember the team) who was suspended for 50 games for taking something that he thought was legal but had a banned substance in it? If that is the case with Big Papi then I will feel very differently. We need ALL the details and I think we either need to have the whole list destroyed or have all the names released. Releasing just one or two at a time makes it all the worse.

I feel very conflicted. I have always been taught there is right and there is wrong. And that rules are not just for some. I was also taught not to be a hypocrite. Those things are the reason that I am feeling so conflicted today.

This might be a long one, so I hope that you will all excuse me for that.
I know that I was one of the VERY 1st to scream from the mountain tops that ARod was caught using. Nothing on this earth would have made me believe that there was any chance that the results were wrong. I guess when it happens to “your family” you tend to look at it differently.
Now don’t get me wrong, I always knew in my heart that we had to have had some juicers in the line-up, and I also figured that it would be Papi and Zazu along with maybe Damon(there was an article in 03 saying that he was going to named) and maybe 1-2 more. And I have always taken the stance that it’s wrong and thats that!!

Garry, I read your last couple of posts. I find myself following your line of thinking. In 03, everybody in baseball figured (I guess) that it was good for the game. Owners, managers, players (some, not all) and by extension the commissioner. Guys were hitting way more long balls (chicks dig the long ball was even a tagline for MLB commercials then)), pitchers were stronger, more fans were going to the games and more money was being made by all. MLB and the MLBPA agree to testing that is anonymous and not threatening to the individual. It was done to see if regular testing needed to be put in place. But after everything is said and done, it wasn’t anonymous, because the government seized the list… and now I am convinced that someone is making a TON of money releasing the names 1 or 2 at a time.
I guess I’m rambling because I am confused as to how to feel.
Does not wanting to give the rings back make me a hypocrite?? I guess it does. Do we let the roiders into the HOF?? WOW, I wouldnt want to have a vote in about 10 years….
I have loved my RedSox since I was 6.. thats 44 years. Not counting the postseason and taking out a year for the strike thats approximately 7128 games.. Thats a lot of love…. especially in the “lean” years. I dont think I will and know that I cant walk away from baseball like I said I would if any of our guys were using. I loved them through all those years, I’m not leaving now.

As for David “Big Papi” Ortiz, I guess that I just go with the flow and see what happens. I just don’t understand his vehement denials earlier this year. Brian.. Once again its something that makes me go HMMMMM…..
I was hoping that papi would have a great game today I think to maybe throw the attention somewhat off the issue. But the issue will be addressed by him . I know this and I will listen with an open mind.
So David I am listening when you are ready to talk!!

I’m guessing someone is going to tell me that Tom Brady has won (3) Super Bowls and Florida is hot during the summer and in the winter it will snow in New England. Also D. Benjamin writes the longest post ever on a blog. Tell me something we didn’t know already, Ortiz coming up positive. Shocking news, NOT! I’m hoping Ortiz will find some H.G.H.–P.E.D. soon because this team needs them and when/if he does, spread them thru the clubhouse. LOL!!

Bud Selig among others have looked the other way because they are making $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ and more $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. It’s just that simple folks.

Julia…

The player you are talking about ( Phillies pitcher J.C. Romero—had a brief career in Boston )

Hey Ellen and crew, I’m on the phone with my Dad, the game is being rebroadcast, and Dad is trying like crazy to figure out who is in the booth with Orsillo. He says the voice is so familiar, that it’s driving him crazy! Help, anyone? Wendy

Bob Montgomery

THANKS, ELLEN!!

Imagine if Youkilis took roids??? He would kill someone after he struck out. LOL!!

The biggest roid team was the Texas Rangers back in the day and the owner was none other than George W. Bush. Things that make me go hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. HA…HA…HA….

To be fair to David Ortiz, Manny and the few others named in this report, the complete report should be released. Get it all out in the open instead of this obvious slow drip of one name after another.
As fans, we all recognize a great deal of the players of that era were on the juice. But for baseball to move beyond this era, I just think the best way to do it is get it out in the open and move on.

GSJAYS…

I’m guessing Boston will trade some “juice” for Halladay, what do you think??? Will it clear customs????

Arnie..

Love your story with the white crosses. Where can I get some???

Brian, I hated those white crosses! I was pretty hyped up as it was and they made me soooo jittery! Every once in a while I’d be partying with my friends and if I was cooking breakfast the next day[not my favorite shift!] sometimes I’d look out the window and “aw s–t” it’s getting light out! I knew later that day I’d be really tired and would be tempted to take one of those. Man, I’d be practically jumping out of my skin if I did. Yikes!

Ellen and Julia,
Your posts kind of remind me of my Dad and how he felt when, in the early 70’s you had “Nixon being Nixon” and all the bad stuff those guys did. My dad was a life-long Republican and I remember him saying that it was so wrong and those were his guys, and they let him down! He was honestly shook up by it. My father was someone who was honest to a fault. If he told you something you knew he believed it, so he was very hurt when people he believed in and trusted turned out to be crooks. Of course, the importance of this pales in comparison to what Nixon did, but your feelings are still hurt when your hero says one thing and does another. It appears that way with Papi. And Julia, your kids learn 90% from what you do and 10% from what you say, if you are conflicted in your feelings they’ll know. You just have to be honest with them. If you feel that what Papi did was wrong and you are disappointed in him but you still love him, then fine, tell your boys that. They’ll understand that it’s possible to feel like that and they will know that even if they make mistakes in life they can trust you to love them. Just be honest and forthright with them. Like I know what I’m talking about!!LOL

Thanks Brian. A question – According to Ortiz’s statement today:

I want to talk about this situation and I will as soon as I have more answers. In the meantime I want to let you know how I am approaching this situation. One, I have already contacted the Players Association to confirm if this report is true. I have just been told that the report is true. Based on the way I have lived my life, I am surprised to learn I tested positive. Two, I will find out what I tested positive for. And, three, based on whatever I learn, I will share this information with my club and the public. You know me – I will not hide and I will not make excuses.
(from boston.com)

It sounds like he didn’t know that his name was in the list from 2003. Someone on my blog said he would have had to know this because they told everyone in 2003 three if he was on the list or not. Does anyone know if the players were notified or not?

Ian – great article about this news on redsox.com.

Thanks Arnie. I am going to wait for all the info to come in and then talk to them more about it. I watched the A-Rod press conference with them (they are 12 & 14) and we talked about admitting mistakes (they did not feel he was sorry) but a further discussion that come out of that was where A-Rod got his drugs – that was a very troubling factor. And they didn’t buy the “Young and Stupid” part – they felt it was insulting to young people and a copout. While my boys play basketball neither of them is a huge athlete nor will they be….something to be grateful for, perhaps. No one ever said it was easy to be a parent – but I’ll never forget the day my Dad told me he doesn’t know how parents do it to with the things they have to discuss with their kids – school shootings, 9/11, The Catholic abuse scandal (I live in Boston!!) and now we get to add steroids and baseball to the list. sigh…..

Arnie, Thanks for tha (when that happened with Nixon (not Trot) my dad was the equivalent of me with AROD>>> I was so wrong to jump and judge…… and Julia, what Arnie said sounds just like how my mom would have handled a situation like this.. and in my very humble opinion,,, My MOM ALWAYS did everything right… I miss her tonight… she knew how deep my love for the RedSox is,, and she would have said something full of wisdom and strength.. Just tell your boys that we all make mistakes of different degrees and they aren’t always going to make the right decisions, but that you will always love them… also tell them that you know this because you havent always made the right choices (i’m sure you faltered once in you life only.. lol) but it’s ok… htey will take their cue from you… You seem to have quite a good handle on raising them to be good young men…
Just be you Julia and they’ll be great… Maybe you should show them some of our posts (be choosy) just to let them know that even we “adults” arent sure how to feel about what Big Papi did, but that forgiving is good…. just me shooting from the hip…

One thing that does bother me is that I know that someone is being paid to “leak” these names.. They have to know who has access to the list… it has to be coming from the government…. I say jusy look at who in government has an ax to grind with MLB/MLBPA and/or Bud Selig… (who made a ton of money while a partial team owner!!!!! Colin Cowherd had the Times reporter on right after this broke today.. he’s going to have more and I can just feel that!!!! I think that whoever is leaking these names is a dirtbag, out for the MONEY$$$$ cha-ching!!!

Good night.. Hey everyone.. try to dream good thought for you !!!! The RedSox will take care of themselves.. we’re the ones that need the help right now…
See you during the day tomorrow…
Ellen… ISTILLBELIEVE!!!

Bosox
Not sure who is getting Halladay or if he’s going to be traded, I guess we’ll know late tomorrow. My hope, though is he goes to Boston versus New York, but the problem is JP is yapping so much, he probably isn’t hearing the offers.

Here’s what baseball needs to do OFFICIALLY!
Clamp a statute of limitations on test results of 2 years. If you tested
positive w/in the past 2 years ago and no action has been taken, none can
be. It’s that way already, it just makes it binding. It also serves to effectually nullify the list. It doesn’t matter if you’re on the
list, it doesn’t effect your pay, it doesn’t effect your standing in the
eyes of baseball. The only people being harmed are the fans! The list has served it’s purpose, it has identified the scope of the problem and it has compelled action to reverse course. There is no further good that can come of it. The players submitted to the testing because they were GUARANTEED the results would be A) Anonymous B) Not made public The names are being released not by baseball, not by the union (the two entities that started the process as a way to forge change), but by people with ulterior motives. The fact that some names are out while 90+ others somehow remain secretly protected (because their names probably aren’t famous enough to stir controversy), doesn’t sit well with me. Again, the intent of doing the initial test in 2003 was to identify the scope of the problem, not to name names, not to ruin careers, not to alienate fans. Amnesty granted is amnesty granted. The fact we know who they are doesn’t change the fact they were granted amnesty to facilitate cooperation in getting the test done. The tests were voluntary! The paradox is that it doesn’t change the fact that they were cheating and now that we know, we can’t un-know. The named players probably have a valid case for lawsuit, what they don’t have anymore, is the trust of their fans. You can’t sue to get THAT back.

ya know what i think is amusing is tha way the yanks fans are absolutely goin bonkers over this…like its a shock….now any yanks fan thats readin this….sit down and read what im goin to say….zazu and ortiz im sure were hot….will probably come out that damon and pedro were also….who knows how many….but now look at your team …clemens and the yankees trainor were in the spotlight correct?…im thinkin the whole friggin team was….go back and look at your numbers…so before you start freakin out on the sox look in the mirror….it was widely accepted for yrs in baseball….it made you stronger and able to recover faster from sore muscles and aches and pains….it didnt increase your ability to see the ball…or hand eye coordination….2004 will forever be my hightlight in baseball…coming from behind 0-3 can never be tainted….steroid era or not….the sox did somethin that has never ever been done in baseball and they did it againt the mighty friggin yankees….how ya like them apples!!!!!……judge

guten Morgan, alles. Big Papi?s response is typical of a person who was served a summons and complaint and said ?I have no comment until I have carefully studied the complaint?. I don?t expect an accused man to admit and confess immediately upon receipt of an accusatory instrument. Papi has previously denied roid use. I do not see how he can and will wiggle out of this mess. Personally I have forgiven Papi with the understanding that he stopped the use/abuse after ?03.
Just a few observations and suggestions. Before Papi?s 3 run shot, the Sox stranded 14 runners in 6 innings. Youk and JBay are still mired in the slump. Lowrie if physically able should play everyday instead of Green. Lowrie can advance a runner on an out. Drew should play everyday as well unless the Sox acquire a viable outfielder.
Smoltz should be closely monitored tonight. If Smoltz does not have it, yank him early. Smoltz?s 92-93 mile fastball doesn?t scare a minor leaguer. The Sox must sweep the O?s to hold ground before facing the TB. The Rays will run the Sox to death. A single or a walk is an automatic double.

The rumor is Buckie, Masterson, Lowrie for AGon and Eckstein.
What do Dustin Pedroia and David Eckstein have in common? hehe…..

chow if that happens brother ill get drunk for 3 days lol….eck is a gritty bastahd like pedey and gonzo to me is the best all around 1st baseman in baseball….offensively and defensively….where did u hear that?….pretty cheap for us i think….judge

probably the 2 smallest plrs in baseball lol

007…

I know one thing Eckstein and Pedroia have in common, when it rains they are the last one’s to know. LOL! I’m sure the Padres will want more than that. Towers is dumb but not that dumb. Gonzalez is the face of the frananchise—he can hit and play first base/friendly contract.

007…

I heard Craig Grebeck is coming to Boston. All 5 feet 6 inches of him. LOL!

mein Freund: Sie haben recht. Beide sind 5’7″ gro. You have won the trip with Roseanne or Rosie to the Fantasy Island for the weekend.

Brian: You won! But have to wait till next weekend with Roseanne or Rosie. lol

Let’s see Brian… ummm could it be their height??

aahhhh.. but Brian, pedey lists himself at 5’6″ Eckstein is listed at 5’7″…

oops.. sorry those responses were to Andy…. my blonde

The owner of the padres is going through an very expensive and NASTY divorce… so things will happen there that wouldnt normally.. you guys might laugh at me for that perspective but this was a topic of conversation at the beginning of the season…

Mc Carver is predicting that Halladay is going to wind up with the Rangers… apparently Nolan Ryan is getting heavily involved… If I am Roy Halladay, thats going to be a diiference maker…. that line up is going to be good if it comes to fruition…

I didnt realize that Eckstein was originally drafted by the RedSox in the 97 draft… or that he is from Florida…

007…

Fantasy Island…My Fantasy Island would have Halle Berry and Julie Banderas of Fox News. Certainly not RoseAnne, she isn’t even on the beer scale. HA..HA…HA…She does have lots of $$$$$ so maybe I would. LOL!!

I’m guessing Victor Martinez will end up in Boston—Buchholz ends up along the lake and Bowden will take Buchholz’s turn in the rotation. If Boston did trade for Gonzalez, what would the Sox do with LaRoche???? There would be very little playing time for him if Gonzalez was in Boston. Theo always trying to get a 3rd team involved, I like that about him….creative!

I wouldn’t mind seeing McDonald ( Providence College grad ) from the Jays, he makes all the plays at s.s. like Alex Gonzalez did. Boston has shown interest in him in the past.

Ellen,

Eckstein was let go when the Sox traded for Ed Sprague. The Sox had to make room on the 40 man roster and the little guy was off. I saw Eckstein in Lowell ( a very ugly city—way too close to Lawrence ) back in the day.

Ellen,

That’s why the Padres were trying to get rid of Peavey during the winter. Imagine a guy with $$$$$$$$$$$$ going thru a messy divorce, who would have thunk???

Dave F.

I’m with you about Bob Montgomery. When I was growing up ( I hope I never grow up ) that is who I listened to as well. I always enjoyed the late great Ned Martin and Monty. I also enjoyed listening to the late great Ken Coleman on the radio, he was superb! Those guys were broadcasters, unlike the guys today. The guys today want to be the show, not all of them but most of them. Martin was low-key and I like that style and Coleman had a perfect radio voice. I miss those guys. Those guys were all about the game!

Just one thing guys —
I love Bob Montgomery. He was there for me growing up on TV38 and on the field during my childhood. He’s a fond memory and it’s fantastic to see him in the booth. I’ve missed him. He and Ned Martin were the team I heard each and every time TV 38 ran a game. Ned and Jerry Remy did the NESN broadcasts and I wasn’t a fan of Remy at the time.
I love Bob and it’s great to have him back. That’s just me and of course it’s 90% great childhood memories but what’s wrong with that.

Finally…
My best to Dustin Pedroia and family. I’m glad David’s test came when it did because it buried an ugly situation in his family.

My guess is that Sox will acquire either V-Mart through direct trade with the Indians Or AGonzo through 3 way trade also. Buckie will be traded in either way. I am hoping for Halladay. I think Halladay will stay with the Jays. If Halladay does go to Texas, watch out Boston or New York, Texas can be the wc team which is 1 1/2 games behind the wc as of now.

texas is the sleeper in all of this….chow is right….they have offense to waste and if they add halladay and possibly a reliever or a number 5 starter…watch out….they can friggin hit and hammer is im sure headed for a breakout of his yr long slump and dl stints….theo….u need even more to make a trade now with all the papi bad publicity…..it needs to be a blockbuster to shade the papi’s positive test…judge

One report says that the Red Sox are actively engaged with Ricciardi this morning for Halladay before going after V-Mart or A Gonzo.

007…….

I’m amazed that teams aren’t beating the door down for Halladay. If the Sox or Yankees trade for Halladay, they will have to give up the farm and more and I doubt that will happen. Anyone outside of the division such as the Rangers or Angels should be knocking the door down to get Halladay, he is one of the best starting pitchers in baseball if not the best.

Victor Martinez looks like Pedro Martinez, have they been seen in the same place??? LOL!!

007…

Theo got married a couple of years ago and has a son— now he is engaged to J.P?????Oh no! HA..HA..HA…HA…

Brian: I agree. The report said that Tex is unwilling to part Derek Holland, the kid threw a gem last night, that doomed the trade. For Halladay I will give up the farm, the Tex farm.
Anyway, the Sox will acquire either V-Mart or AGonzo. LaRoache will probably be part of the package. Halladay is a long shot.

personally vmart would probably be the best pick up…albeit causing roster kaos….hes really a team guy….a leader and very emotional plr…..he could really lift a stale dugout….halladay would ofcourse be the most heralded….and gonzo knowin SD is just too expensive….SD needs alot and wants alot….i expect to see vmart in boston…halladay im thinkin somehow winds up with the dodgers or texas if traded….maybe even the yanks….gawd…cc doesnt scare me at all….horrible post season record….but facin doc and aj will be tough….come on theo WOOT WOOT….COME ON THEO WOOT WOOT….if somethin doesnt happen and sox miss the playoffs….theo loses his job….judge

lets really make waves theo….get vmart and halladay brother….u would be a hero….judge

hey trix i sent ya a trade in fantasy BB….

What do you know, Tigers acquire Jerrod Washburn! I thought the Mariners just signed Washbirn for the extension.

Hey! BosoxBrian!

As usual, I agree with most of what you say (except obviously, the bit about me authoring the longgggeeesssttt posts [lol]). You had to wonder whether Papi”s meteoric rise was solely a result of his change of circumstances…or whether it was assisted. I do hope there is some palatable explanation. If only that Papi was extremely careless about what he put in his body. Whatever it is, make it the truth. Please, no Giambi apologies — I’m going to apologize to you all now, although my lawyers tell me I can’t tell you why I am apologizing. Vomitosis!!!

This drop by drop approach with the names on “the list” is another sad day in the life of a lawyer. I only wish the Times had the journalistic integrity to refuse to report any story, no matter how many papers it would sell, unless the source could and would be attributable. I know that’s not going to happen, but there should be consequences for the lawyers who are doing something they are not supposed to be doing, violating grand jury court orders and what have you. It justifies the way many of you vilify some of those in my profession.

I once again sense some are creeping out on the ledge over this year’s version of the Sox. While I sense some eery similiarities to the August, 2006 swoon, I maintain that the Sox are fundamentally sound team. That said, they are having some interesting struggles with deciding how much to play the currently-productive tandem of LaRoche/Lowell, allowing Youk some bench time to clear his head of these concerning “strike-out proclivities.” I also hope that the Jason Bay we have come to know and love returns…and soon!!!

I’ll be at Camden Yards tomorrow night with my younger daughter. It will be my first opportunity to see Josh B. up-close and personal. Can’t wait!!!

I’m trying to consciously make these shorter for you, BSB (lol)!!!!

dg – I hope you have better luck at Red Sox games that I did this season! lol! I hope you and your daughter have a great time!!!

back from lunch.. went home to pick up some chili-mac..
Am I missing something or have we been absent one DGneubert?? I dont recall seing his posts the past couple of days.. could be just another “my bad/blonde” tho…
hi dbenj…. It wouldnt matter if the Times had refused to report it.. someone else would have picked it up.. But then again, journalistic integrity, I believe, is going by the wayside just like newspapers… It is very unfortunate.
Bring us GOOD LUCK tomorrow night.. I hope you can get an autograph for your daughter… That would probably make her night, huh?

very quiet about sox….that usually mean somethin will happen….i still think the yanks will nab someone….judge

I responded to your request Judge…

I responded to you Judge..

red sox close to deal with SD for gonzo…..very very expensive for sox….lowrie, buchy, and masterson

The rumor is the Red Sox are very close to signing V-Mart according to USA Today.

THE RED SOX ACQUIRE OR TO ACQUIRE V-MART. WELCOME TO THE RED SOX, VICTOR!!!!!!!

D. Benjamin…

Good to read on here. I was wondering where you were, I thought Coach Tressell and you have been golfing.

Nobody writes any better on here than you. ( It kills me to write that–lol ) Perhaps you’ll see Victor Martinez’s first game with the Sox. One of the U.S.A. Today baseball writers is saying that deal is going to happen. I would like too see it.

Beckett tomm. night, I hope he mows them down at Fenway Park South also known as Camden Yards. Enjoy, Camden Yards looks like a great park and a place I will visit before I move upstairs for good. Bring them luck.

Look at this – see who is it says Victor is playing for:

Julia,

The Sox don’t have to sign V. Martinez, all they have to do is trade for him—Buchholz???? He is signed thru next season, a club option of 7.5 million if he is traded. In other words, a friendly contract for a guy that can flat out hit.

It’s going to be V-Mart. The asking price for AGonzo is three times the price for Halladay. Kevin Towers must be on drug.

Rumors have the Dodgers in the hunt for Halladay.

Julia…

Wikipedia on top of things, gotta love it. The guy who invented Wikipedia, broke up with his girlfriend thru wikipedia. Now that is a funny story.

i wonder who we lost for vmart?

That is funny Brian!! Oh yeah – “trade” sorry! lol!!

I don’t know if it’s true but it is funny that Wikipedia has updated his page.

007…

Have you seen the team’s that Towers has put together over the years??? Of course he is on drugs! Billy Beane, Kevin Towers and J.P. Riccardi are still general managers how????? Why??? These guys do nothing almost every single year. Over-rated as I like too say. At least Cashman has drafted Chamberlain, Hughes, Montero among others but these guys do almost nothing and they pick very high every draft.

I suspect LaRoche will go with the deal for V-Mart

Judge…

Perhaps Buchholz???? No names yet….We’ll see.

According to FOXsports.com:

The deal is straight-up between the Red Sox and Indians. No third team is involved.

The Indians’ exact return is not known, but the Red Sox did not include either right-hander Clay Buchholz nor right-hander Daniel Bard in the deal, according to a source.

The deal almost certainly will end the Red Sox’s pursuit of Padres first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, likely ensuring that he will remain in San Diego.

The Red Sox can use Martinez as a catcher, first baseman and DH. When he plays first, Kevin Youkilis will move to third, spelling Mike Lowell.

In effect, Martinez gives the Red Sox protection against regressions by Lowell, catcher Jason Varitek and designated hitter David Ortiz.

Martinez is hitting .284 with 15 home runs and 67 RBIs. He has made three All-Star teams in his eight years in the league ? all in Cleveland ? including two of the last three years.

Buchholz isn’t in the deal for Martinez, according to reports. Bowden??? Masterson??? Some reports have the Sox going after S.D. closer Heath Bell, set-up man for the Bos. pen. We’ll see how it all ends.

i think buchy isnt included….i think halladay is still on his way to boston….vmart and halladay would be a bomb!!!!

Word had it during the All Star game that V. Martinez has never caught a knuckleball. He was going to catch Wakefield if Wake got into the game that night.

Justin Masterson and Nick Hagadone rumored to be part of the trade

I would keep LaRoache (if he is not traded) and send down Kottaras. Can V-Mart catch knuckle ball?

Brian I believe you are right – I don’t think V-Mart has caught a knuckleballer.

Julia..

I guess Hagadone is now Haga”gone”. If Masterson is in the deal, I wish him the best. I really like him and he comes across as such a good guy. He settled that pen down last year when they put him there last summer. He reminds me of D. Lowe, Masterson will have a long career.

Rumor about LaRoche –

Mets Acquire Adam Laroche from Boston as long as the Martinez deal goes through.

It’s a two team deal. The Sox previously turned down V-Mart for Buckie straight up. I guess the price should be less. But things can change and the Sox are in hitting slump, kinda desperate.

im thinkin bucjy isnt included in that deal….i think theo isnt done….i think halladay is comin too!!!!

Buckie and D Bard are not in the trade for V-Mart, so reported Foxsports.

tek will take the hit in this trade…i would play yuke everyday with the occasional day off….mikey gets spelled twice a week…he must he is gettin old and i want him healthy for playoffs….papi should lose alot of playin time too…larohe is probably odd out and will be included in an after wire trade or maybe in a halladay trade…i send buchy, bard and tazawa if need be to toronto for halladay for 2 yrs….beckett and halladay at top….i really like bard but i would love halladay….judge

I love the report that the Sox asked Seattle about King Felix, the Mariners turned them down. Go after the elite, not the second tier player/pitcher. When you have the prospects like the Sox do, you can go after guys like King Felix. Sometimes you get them and other time’s you don’t. It’s like that “Hot” girl standing there, you never know until you ask, all she is going to say is no…I have heard “No” several times, what is another “No”. LOL!! Similar concept I guess.

Beatwriter for the Tribe on Twitter says a third player might be going to them also for V-Mart

I’m guessing Bowden could take Masterson’s role in the pen. Assuming LaRoche is dealt away.

Heyman said the Braves are interested in LaRoache as well.

On Twitter:

BNightengale (Of USA Today) The Martinez deal should be officially announced very shortly.

Judge,

Why would the Jays want LaRoche??? Buchholz, Bowden and ????? I wouldn’t deal Bard away. With Masterson gone today, the pen needs quality arms out there. Getting rid of Bard right now would not be a wise move by the Sox. He will play a bigger role in that pen as the season gets deeper and deeper. I’m with you about getting Halladay, that trio would be unbeatable in Oct. but I doubt it will happen.

I always prefer V-Mart to AGonzo if you read my previous post days ago. Where can you find a a power switch hitting 1B man and a catcher.

Local Sports Reporter just confirmed on Twitter:

RochieWBZ (Dan Roche) Just confirmed Sox getting V Martinez for Masterson and Hagadone #redsox #wbztv #mlb

I like the deal as well, V. Martinez will have an impact not only this year but also next year and hopefully beyond. The guy can flat out hit! He is a versatile player–( plays 2 positions not including D.H. ) and the Sox love those guys. Also everything you here about him in the clubhouse is nothing but a positive thing.

Judge..

I’m with you about the Sox doing something more. I’m sure they are still talking to the Jays about Halladay. Buchholz, Bowden, Anderson??? ???? I’m against trading Bard!

Beatwriter for the Tribe on Twitter says a third player might be going to them also for V-Mart

i like this deal also chow buddy….great fit….i think now vmart is the 50/50 catcher with tek….and also will play 1st when yuke spells mikey….i still think theo has another bomb to drop….somethin is comming….judge

Local TV station just send out a breaking news email – saying that we got V-Mart for Materson & Hagadone

toronto still needs a closer….send paps, buchy, and bowden for halladay….somethin is up cause buchy, bard, bowden, and tazawa werent included…judge

I will be saddened if Danny Bard is part of the deal for any trade including Halladay’s.

There are reports that Brian Price is part of the deal to the Tribe.

Gordon Edes – Yahoo sports is reporting that Adam LaRoche has been traded to the Brewers. I’m sorry to see him go!

Judge,

Trade Papelbon right now??? No way!! Would I deal him away before he is a free agent??? Perhaps but that isn’t going to happen for a bit. Papelbon this year has had a sub-par season, too many walks but the guy is still one of the elite closers in the game!

LaRoche we hardly knew ya pal. He played well, good luck in Mill.

Reports are:

Casey Kotchman to Red Sox for LaRoche

LaRoche to the Braves would be interesting, since he started there!

im thinkin smoltz goes to bp with masterson goin…or timmy…judge

I’m very pleased with the V-Mart trade also. I will miss Masterson, but you give something to get something. I also hope we don’t include Bard in any deal, for Halladay or anyone else. But I think Judge is right to smell something coming. Get it done, Theo! GO SOX!

Speculation on Twitter that we got Kotchman to be part of another trade – but to whom for whom?

Brian, I think that the Marlins will get Heath Bell, they are hot and heavy for a closer.

I like the V-Mart deal, also. I will miss Masterson–I believe he’ll be special down the road–but you give something to get something. I hope we don’t deal Daniel Bard either, for Halladay or anyone else–he is going to be too valuable, esp. if down the road (let alone now!) we deal away the Papelbon Project/Big Mouth. Get it DONE, Theo! GO SOX!

yay!

i too think that we havent seen the last of the RedSox deals today….

now that rolen is gone from toronto….how about lowrie, buchy and bowden for halladay?

Double-posting again! SNARL! GO SOX!

Reports are that we are not trading Kotchman for anyone – so why did we trade away LaRoche?

I don’t understand the Kotchman for LaRoche trade. It doesn’t make alot of sense to me. What’s the difference between Kotchman and LaRoche??? Very little, LaRoche has more power but Kotchman will hit for a higher avg. Who says you can’t go back home??? LaRoche back to Atl. I saw Kotchman in High School, the St. Pete area. The kid was man against boys.

Theo did an excellent job in V-Mart deal. Masterson, HagaGone (courtesy of Julia) and Brian Price for V-Mart. What a exciting last two days? Comeback win and the trade.

This LaRoche trade for Kotchman isn’t the last deal for the Sox today. Things that make me go hmmmmmmmmmmmm.

I agree with you, Brian, about whether the LaRoche for Kotchman trade makes sense, but I didn’t think the LaRoche deal made sense in the first place. It only makes sense to me if he’s part of another trade. Why Kotchman, though? Good question.

Via Twitter:

Manny Delcarmen nearly in tears when he found out Masterson was traded #redsox

Dear Santa Theo….. pleeeeeeeeease…. I’d like another front end starter!!!

I know, Brian, that LaRoche and Kotchman are very similar players. I follow the Braves in the local market, so I’ve seen that LaRoche and Kotchman are very similar players. I only saw LaRoche as a chip for another trade, but that is what I think of Kotchman, also. We have too many corner players otherwise.

Greg,

LaRoche and Kotchman both hit from the left side, very similar players.

Halladay a Ranger????

I also had heard that Halladay might go to the Rangers. We’ll see, I guess.

Halladay a member of the Red Sox???? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm

We shall see, I really love the speculation on July 31.

I have to run out – ARGHHH!!! – be back soon!!!

Okay its 4pm…. now lets see what the announce…. it could be announced in an hour or more as long as the deal was consummated before 4pm

According to Sports IIlustrated, Halladay came close to becoming a Ranger but talks broke down

check some of the other sites kramer…yanks fans were jumpin on the wagon…some came in here too…to me its a mute point….its not like corked bats were used ….im not condonin it but it was a constant across the board in baseball and to say the sox won the series cause they cheated is ridiculous….

Can Casey Kotchman play OF?

Judge,
I don’t know what touched off your 8:10 AM post, but there appears to be a contradiction. Is it ?tha way the yanks fans are absolutely goin bonkers over this.? or ?so before you start freakin out on the sox??

In any case, the complete Rumored 2003 Steroid Users List was published a little over a month ago on RotoInfo.Com. It contained the names of eight Red Sox and seven Yankees. This was the year before Rodriguez joined the Yankees and Foulke joined the Red Sox (?). RotoInfo moved the article so the link posted on Bomber Beat is useless. I will gladly E-mail the list to you and anyone interested. My active E-mail is below!

FYI, I believe Papi?s claim that he is unaware his name is on the list and feel nothing but sorrow for him!

according to Sports Illustrated: Halladay came close to becoming a Ranger, but talks broke down……..

007…

I am not aware that Kotchman can play o.f. 1b and D.H. and that is about it. Kotchman is a good glove at 1b ( like LaRoche ) but doesn’t have as much power as LaRoche. Kotchman is more like a .280-.300 hitter–gap hitter— not much power. Perhaps Mark Grace???

Kotchman is Gold Glove caliber defensively, LaRoche is below average!

I don’t think LaRoche is a below average glove at first, Kotchman is solid at first like LaRoche. Kotchman is younger and is under team control after this season, unlike LaRoche.

It appears that Halladay is not going to be traded, not until the offseason. The question, who is to replace Masterson? Bowden or Smoltz?

Brian,
I saw that somewhere when the Pirates trade was made. Don’t remember where, but no matter now!

Andy,
There are still August waivers!

Big Papi is expendable now. I think Papi will be a DH against RHP only. I can be wrong.

I can’t believe we got rid of three very talented arms for one catcher and then unloaded LaRoche. I realize we need a catcher but this seems like jumping the gun here.
I am sick of Theo’s body swapping ideas. So far it’s the farm system that keeps saving the Red Sox and it’s the first place Theo goes to get over rated junk. Gagne, Drew, Lugo, Penny, etc. are just cash flow sucking machines. I’m sick of it.
Just my opinion.

Okay – I don’t know what to make of this – just after 4pm we had several severe microburst go through some communities in Massachusetts – including mine. Lots of tree damage, property damage. Were the baseball gods making a comment on the trades we made today?

Thanks Ellen! We are okay at my home – I was actually out with my oldest son on an errand – a street over from me a car went into a house! WILD times!! I’ll cheer them on and HOPEFULLY I’ll be able to post here as well!!! It is REALLY bad today!!

Man, this is a tough business — I can see I wouldn’t enjoy managing (as opposed to coaching) a baseball team (no matter what I say) — I don’t have the heart for it. Masterson was falling off lately, significantly. I am surprised he, plus extras, was enough to cement the deal. But he certainly was one of the nicest most like-able guys on this team. It hurts to see him go. Got to be major disappointing for him, maybe he knew this was up, and explains his recent pitching slump. Was Delcarmen crying when he hear the news out of relief or out of hurt for his friend?

And then La Roche showed real excitement to come here, and play in Fenway — and is gone in a week. I suppose these players know its coming — that is why everyone goes for the money. If you are not at the very top, you are probably gone — that’s the way it is.

Missed this trade earlier:

The White Sox acquired right-handed pitcher Jake Peavy from the Padres on Friday in exchange for left-handers Aaron Poreda and Clayton Richard and right-handers Dexter Carter and Adam Russell.

I think this was similar to the trade he nixed earlier in the year. Do we want him in the American League?

Hope you’re OK Jules… and hope there wasnt any damage to your property…
I’m off to slay em on the lanes… I’ll be back later..
Give em hell for me Julia!!!

Im ok with vmart sorry to see masterson go though… I was hoping Theo had one more card to play especially after LaRoche & Kotchman being swapped… Gonzo would of been a great addition but Theo must not have gotten my wish list… Hopefully the waiver wire will bring something …Tom (aka nippy 419)

JD Drew is out with a groin strain. Is it too late to get Kotsay back????

NEW THREAD

I saw on the previous thread that JD has a hangnail, er, groin strain. I wonder if Injury Season is about to begin for JD. Hmmm…
