Flexibility at the corners

The Mike Lowell deal isn’t done just yet, but it will be within a matter of days. All that’s left is red tape and medical clearance.

So who plays third base for the Red Sox next season? Maybe Adrian Beltre. But don’t be surprised, either, if it’s Kevin Youkilis. Much like when it was floated out a couple of weeks ago that Dustin Pedroia could play shortstop, somehting that probably helped in leverage with Marco Scutaro, the Red Sox can take a similar road with Adrian Beltre. Yes, they could tell Scott Boras they’d really love Beltre to be their 2010 third baseman, but at a reasonable acquisition cost.

Otherwise, general manager Theo Epstein could go in any number of directions. Would they make Casey Kotchman the primary first baseman, perhaps signing Mark DeRosa to form some sort of left-right platoon? Would they go after Nick Johnson?

In a side note, away from baseball, we should all wish a very happy retirement to Master Sergeant Michael Warren Baker, known on MLBlogs as shakenbake. Sgt. Baker — an avid Sox fan — retired today, and he should be recognized for his fine career.

Ive read on a couple of other forums that people are going to “stop watching” the Sox if this doesnt happen or if that thing happens… whatever scenario that they want doesnt come true,. the 1st thing that popped into my mind is WOW, that’s some kind of fan… I think if the organization were to put gollege kids on the field I’d still be a fan of my RedSox!!! You couldnt get me NOT to watch whatever team the RedSox field….. I guess I’m just a RedSox Junkie!!! or you could say I have RSCD: REDSOX COMPULSIVE DISORDER!!!

Ian,
What was the reasoning for letting Jorge Jimenez unprotected in the Rule 5 draft, we lost a good young player, that I’ve seen now for a year. This kid could hit and had a gun for an arm at 3rd base. This was not smart.

Arnie, you were correct with your question. “We Sox fans are intelligent” would be the correct phrasing, even if you put any other person’s name(s) in with it. Good job, you get a No-Prize. Bonus points because it happens to be true, also! ;)
Scutaro might be a name that lends itself to “Scoot” or “Scooter”, esp. if he gets a SB or two. Some others have already called him “Scuts”. If you want historical nicknames, how about “Marco Polo”? ;)
I’ll pull for anyone we bring in at 3B, whether it be Beltre or anyone else, or if Youk moves to 3B (maybe “I Don’t Know” will be on 3B!) ;), but I sure will miss Mike Lowell! Godspeed, Mike!

Well, time to start thinking of nick names for our new Sox. Boof Bonser is a nick name in and of itself so we must find him a normal name like: Robert Bronson. Or maybe Bobby Bronson,,,, yea that’s it!
Marco Scutaro,,,,,,,hmmm , maybe Scooteroo,,, no, too long,,, how about something historical so Dave, Greg and Andy will feel like us, or is it we? Sox fans are intelligent………….wait, now I can’t see the keyboard I’m laughing too hard….. intelligent, Hahaha,,,,,,Where was I???? Oh yea, a smart nick name,,,,Marco Polo Scutaro. No that’s even longer.
I need suggestions folks!

Bloody servers!! That’s even funnier, because the double-posts registered a half-hour apart! That takes special effort!

The only thing we can tell ourselves is to have faith in Theo. What ever the back office decides, I’m sure it will be best for the team. We may not see results in 2010 but it could unfold in 2011. On the other hand, as much as we try not to “keep pace” with the yanks, we have to remember, there are teams in the AL i.e Twins, Rangers and Rays that could steal the wild card. It’s not as guaranteed as we would like to think, let’s just hope they are positive moves.

Thanks Ian! Keep up the good work! GO SOX!!!

enjoy you retirement “TOP”…..my mere 9 yrs pales in comparison to 26 ….lord….ty for your service ….i hope it doesnt take u 15 yrs like me to realize u dont have to get up at 4 am anymore lol….onto the team…or is it….i ve always referred to marco as “scuts” myself….im still not warm and fuzzy on him being our everyday SS but we shall see…he does bring a positive attitude and he will make the plays he needs too….lets hope he can handle another full season though…. the trade of mikey is interesting…and thats all im gonna say cause i love mikey and i would raher have him on my bench ready to play or in a platoon with papi than sittin in texas gettin ready to retire ….now it looks to me that possibly theo is stockpilin tradin pieces for SD….now if…and i say its a major friggin if ….gonzo is traded for ,then ill be happy….the guy is a pure stud….if all the hoopla with zazu hadnt happened…id still take gonzo over him because he brings a gold glove to the table and hes a monster hitter in all sense of the phrase….great power to left….now….who would u give up for him….im thinkin u would need 4-5 major league ready plrs plus some maybes….ie….kotchman,max ramirez(this kid can hit),casey kelly, buchy and probably lars and a cpl other arms like bowden and tazawa….now why wouldnt u just pull that trigger….i would….the sox have money and are able to sign FA pitchin where its needed….we can raise our own also …there are no guarentees what a prospect will do when hes finally called up…nomar and wade boggs were just average in minors….yuke and pedey were never expected to be as great as they are….and then theres the busts….brian rose ,and so many more in that type of supposed blue chip prospects…gonzo is an unreal community guy also…he gives back…and gives alot….theo isnt and has never really overly impressed me with his deals…he has done a great job with the minor system…but gonzo is just pure GOLD….the fact the sox are even talkin with texas has me excited….i love cruz also and borbon….so maybe we shall see some more plrs come from texas…i wouldnt be upset if the sox traded for d lowe also…hes a horse….and did everythin the sox asked of him…and more….timmy could easily eat up innings early for us and then move to bp if needed also…hittin a knuckle ball in the early months is like tryin to catch a fly with chopsticks lol…but…i think theo will just sit on his hands again and say well vmart was teechnically our big offseason signin…i still like the sox with kotch at 1st and yuke at 3rd…if papi gets his stroke back we wont be talkin about who we shoulda signed or gone after…IF…..dont count out dye commin to boston either….he can still hit…he just had a bad yr last yr…anyways im gettin stoked for xmas to come and go so we can start creepin towards SPRING TRAININ….trix ill see ya at the support group….hi im judge…and im a red sox junkie…….judge

Interesting note on MLBtraderumors.com today about JBay. I tried to copy and paste but couldnt get it to work so check it out. It has some ‘particulars’ of what teh Mets have offered for him… WOW!!! a contract similar to Carlos Beltran.. someting like 20 million in his final contract year… too much.. Go get Gonzo or Holliday.

Trouble is, Ellen, we know enough about Born-A** that if J-Bay gets that much from the Mets, Holliday will be seeking at least that much…Hmmm…

I know.. Bays agent Joe Urban seems to have studied at Boras’ slimey agent school.. (If I had an agent I would want them to do the same for me…. sad as that sounds)

Thanks for your service Mike/shakenbake and Happy Retirement!

This whole Jason Bay drama is getting crazy! And a “bridge year” GIVE ME A BREAK!!! Theo – get out and do what needs to be done NOW!!!!!

Arnie – I LOVE the idea of needing nicknames!! Have to see what I can come up with…..

In re to nicknames, there was already a “scooter”, Phil Rizzuto.. so far I think that Judges “scuts” is good.. but spell it with a z..

I am not as sold on J-Bay as I think most of you are — too streaky for me (well the whole team was that way last year), but too many strike-outs for me to dish it all out. Nice guy, but not essential. His dad is supposed to be a long-time Sox fan — it would seem he is neutral on the Sox the way he is playing the market. I guess its all relative, but when you start making the money these guys are playing — I sure would want to play for team I really wanted to play for, over a few mill more — once you get into double digit millions, — mind boggling that this kind of money doesn’t completely ruin the game — to me it already has — but I keep watching anyway.
