Six weeks until Fort Myers

Hard to believe, isn’t it? Before you know it, the equipment truck will be at Fenway Park, ready for takeoff into what should be an exciting 2011 season.

January has been an eventful month for the Red Sox the last couple of years. In 2009, that was when they struck deals for Rocco Baldelli and John Smoltz. Last year, the Sox ended up getting Adrian Beltre in January, and he wound up being one of the most important players in the ’10 team.

This year? Sorry to disappoint, but I think the bulk of the work has already been done. Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford, Bobby Jenks, Dan Wheeler. It has already been a highly productive winter for Theo Epstein. The re-signing of Hideki Okajima should be announced within days. Aside from that, there might be some tinkering here or there. The bench could still use a Bill Hall-type who could roam between the infield and the outfield.

Other than that, here are the main pieces team that will come to Fort Myers:

Catchers: Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Jason Varitek.

Infielders: Adrian Gonzalez, Dustin Pedroia, Marco Scutaro, Jed Lowrie, Kevin Youkilis.

Outfielders: Carl Crawford, Jacoby Ellsbury, Mike Cameron, J.D. Drew, Darnell McDonald.

DH: David Ortiz.

Starting pitchers: Jon Lester, Clay Buchholz, Josh Beckett, John Lackey, Daisuke Matsuzaka.

Relief pitchers: Jonathan Papelbon, Daniel Bard, Bobby Jenks, Dan Wheeler, Matt Albers, Felix Doubront, Hideki Okajima, Scott Atchison, Tim Wakefield.

Very very scary roster on paper. Only thing left for Theo to do is go to his local scientific supply store and purchase some chemistry. Some of those scary paper Yankee teams had their issues. Theo did his job….now it’s time for these players to perform…….TOGETHER!!!!!! Go Sox!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I, for one, am not going to be disappointed if not much else happens with the Red Sox FO. I don’t expect more than a few looser ends to be tied up. It was nice to have a good idea what our team (incl. the BP) would look like before the holidays were over! Good work, Theo!
It sounds like Beltre may end up with the Rangers. We’ll see! If so, we’ll see our old 3B on Opening Day in Arlington! Hmmm…

Roberto Alomar and Bert Blyleven join executive Pat Gillick in entering the Hall of Fame!

Hi ya Greg! You are right. Beltre is here for the ride in Arlington. I, for one, will enjoy watching him play for the Rangers as I was a big Beltre fan in a Sox uni. Since we attend Rangers games regularly it will be nice to see him in person. As for the Sawx, this should be a dynamite season! Can’t wait for opening day! I’d rather be at Fenway, but we’ve got the next best thing and without the stifling heat! Go Sawx!

Bos should be really good this year

I’m sure Theo will have a few remianing moves left to give us a slightly more than boring January (not that the Pats aren’t helping) either by grabbing a utility player or maybe a cast-off or two for potential help going into Fort Meyers.

The line-up (especially the speed laden top of the order) does indeed look frightening. Aside from Philly’s starting pitching and Texas’ now worrisome young core one must wonder if there is a more fear enducing group in either league. Sure the Bombers are still potent, but still older as well.

Chemistry shouldn’t be too big of an issue as the Red Sox are generally built from front office to the grounds crew on chemistry. Theo wouldn’t trade, sign or too often draft a player whose too self-involved and put the team secondary and Tito wouldn’t allow it anyway. Willy-Mo Pena take note. You figure Manny and Carl Everett were signed under Duquette’s regime… Jurassic Carl was ejected a little late but Manny was wrangled in till it was a real problem even Tito or Papi could no longer handle and quickly deposited in La-La Land. I don’t forsee this team having a meltdown of any such porportion.

What’s the latest on the multiyear Gonzales contract?
