A couple of "Idiots" to renew acquintances in World Series
Remember the "Idiots" as Johnny Damon proclaimed them? How could you forget them. Five years ago today, they won the World Series, snapping an 86-year World Series championship drought.
Weird, huh? It feels like 86 years ago that we even had a championship drought around here.
So yes, it will be a little strange for Red Sox fans when this World Series starts on Wednesday night in New York and Johnny Damon is in one dugout and Pedro Martinez is in the other.
I think I know which "Idiot" all -- or most of you -- will be rooting for.
Personally, I thought it was a pleasure to cover both of these guys. I got to be around Pedro every day for three years and Johnny every day for four years, and I appreciated them both in terms of their competitiveness and their personalities.
One of these guys will collect a second ring before this World Series is over.
Pedro will start Game 2 on Thursday night at Yankee Stadium.
Here is Damon, who spoke in a euphoric Yankees clubhouse after Sunday night's game, on the matchup, and on Pedro in general.
"Well, it will be fun if I can be successful off of him," Damon said. "If you're not successful, it's not too much fun, especially this time of year. I'm happy for Pedro. Not too many teams bid on him to pick him up during the offseason. He waited and he picked the right team and he's back in the World Series."
Strange though, right?
"It's strange, but I always hope the best for Pedro, except against us obviously," Damon said. "But what a great teammate. I've been fortunate enough to be able to play with him and against him for all these years."
It should be a great matchup. I'm looking forward to this World Series.

Unfortunately, Damon is "old hat" in my book. I will always be grateful to Damon and all the "Idiots" of the 04 team, and that team will always be special. Damon, however, is one I root against all the more now, BECAUSE of that connection to the 04 team.

Ian,
Honestly, I have lost all interest. We are supposed to get 8 inches of snow tomorrow, and since the Phillies won I have stopped following the rest of the games. It seems like baseball has faded with the leaves and now I am on to football and hockey and snowshoeing in the mountains. Who did you say was playing??
Dave, quick science question for you: If I was going 10 times the speed of light how is that expressed as MPH? I am thinking of having the engine in my pickup rebuilt and I want more speed!! So I will need to recalibrate the speedometer. Cmon Mr. Wizard, what's the answer?

Oh Dave, a sub-question: If the speed of light is,,,,,,,well, I don't know exactly, but pretty darn fast, what is the speed of darkness? The reason I ask is that when I was a kid I used to turn off the light at night and try to jump into bed before the room got dark, but the darkness always beat me. Darkness is pretty fast but what's its exact speed?

Greg,
THANK YOU for the encouragement. Sometimes I just feel so worthless trying to help her but sometimes I forget I have done math my entire life and its as natural to me as riding a bike...or as to Arnie cooking meals.
Arnie,
Darkness is the absence of light and therefore energy. The speed of darkness technically is zero. The speed of light is ABOUT 3 (plus 8 zeros) each second or 300,000,000 meters / sec!
Naomi and I were just talking about a newly discovered planet about the size of Jupiter with carbon, methane and water...ya water. Sadly it is 60 light years away. We can't talk to them. Any signal we send will be 60 years away from arrival.
Dave...
p.s. so great to have tcd133 a distant memory!

Dave, I didn't ask meters per second!! Mile per hour, Dave----mile per hour!!!!
And to expand on my darkness theme: I believe that darkness and consciousness are the only things that actually exist. As you know the physical universe can be said to contain energy and matter. Energy tends to dissipate, if you warm something up pretty soon it cools off. Light goes away when you shut off the switch. And so on.
Matter and energy are interchangeable, and in a simple way you could say that matter is energy slowed down, so it too will someday dissipate.
Which leaves you with darkness. And, of course, consciousness, since energy cannot be destroyed, when it dissipates it reverts back to pure consciousness, or potential energy. And then another big bang comes along and,,,,, here we go again.!!
Something for you to chew on in between bouts of fractions and common nouns. Enjoy!!
Hi Ellen. No snowmen for me thanks. But I am here from time to time reading everybody's plans for the Sox' future.

Hey all,
I have noticed a lot of folks interested in the off-season acqusition of Adrian Gonzalez. I would love to see him in Boston but I also know that he is a lot like Jason Bay....who by the way I have no problem with, but some folks on here aren't sold on him. He did not hit for a great average but he hit some dingers and drove in a lot of runs. He has his share of strike outs.....like a power hitter is likely to do. Gonzalez isn't a lot different aside from he bats left-handed. Check out the numbers.
Gonzalez last 4 seasons:
24 HR 82 RBI .304
30 100 .282
36 119 .279
40 99 .277
He will whiff over 100 times in a full season
Bay last 7 seasons:
26 82 .282
32 101 .306
35 109 .286
21 84 .247
31 101 .286
31 101 .285
36 119 .267
Before we decide that Gonzalez had no one around him in SD remember, Bay did not exactly have a star studded line-up around him in Pittsburgh either. I for one would love to have them both in Boston and be happy with the numbers they give us. I think a lot of us fall in to the trap of comparing every hitter we pick up to ZAZU, conciously or sub-conciously....which really is not fair because ZAZU will go down in history as one of the greatest right-handed hitters in MLB history. It will be a long time before we see another like him or Pujols. Let's get this team situated early in the off-season and be ready to rock and roll come April. Go Sox!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Math question of the day:
The distance between Pt A and Pt B is 3,550 meters. Jon walks from Pt A to Pt B. After 5 minutes Joe rides a bike from Pt B to Pt A. Jon and Joe meet each other after 10 minutes. Joe rides 160 meters per minute faster than Jon walks. What’s Jon’s walking speed?

Contrary to belief, I think the Sox could trade for A-Gonz. The problem is will Theo want to give up the best prospects. With Hoyer in SD he will want prospects, our best prospects. 4for1, or possibly 5 for 1, might happen. Riddick, Bucholz, Kelly, Westmorland, would get us A-Gonz. Would you do it? I think this is not going to happen, so it is nice to envision this but Theo wont give up the farm for a 1st baseman.
Chapman throws in Boston today. This off-season might not be that active I think. Bay asking for 16-18 million a year, and Boston walks 14-15 he comes back. I think the big issue will be for length of contract.
Adios Amigos.

This was what came up when I googled Adrain Gonzalez::
Beat writer Bill Madden from the New York Daily News wrote yesterday that one of new Padres GM Jed Hoyers first order of business is to trade first baseman Adrian Gonzalez this offseason to maximize their return for the slugging first baseman.
Here is what Madden had to say:
With 35-year old Jed Hoyer taking over the GM duties for the San Diego Padres, his first big challenge will be to decide what to do with 40-homer first baseman Adrian Gonzalez. He is a San Diego product and the Padres' one gate attraction, but they know they won't be able to afford Gonzalez when his contract runs out after his $5.5million option year in 2011. In order to get maximum return, the Padres probably will have to trade Gonzalez this winter. Either way, it will be about the most unpopular trade they could ever make. And no doubt, the first bidders at Hoyer's door will be the Red Sox, since he served as GM Theo Epstein's top assistant since 2004.
Report any abuse or spam
Yes, I think you all are right that we could get Adrian Gonzalez. I do wonder what the Padres would ask in return. Gonzalez is VERY inexpensive, and it would be interesting to see what "Maximum Value" is, for the Padres. And yes, it would be the most unpopular move Hoyer could make, competing only with the Peavy trade.

Andy, Jon was walking at a speed of 78 meters per minute, and Joe was riding his bike at a speed of 238 meters per minute. Even though Jon had a head start, they didn't meet halfway, for Jon walked 1170 meters and Joe rode 2380 meters. I wonder what they talked about when they met, though? hmmmmm......

There's like way too much math and science going on around here. Arnie, to answer your question, light travels at 186,000 miles per second. So, if your truck will travel at 10 times the speed of light, it would travel at 186,000 * 60 seconds * 60 minutes * 10 or 6,696,000,000 miles per hour. That means if you left Denver now, you could be here in Orange Park in just over one one-thousandth of a second. I think that's about Warp Factor 7.
Two idiots going at it at Yankee Stadium brings up one of the things really wrong with baseball today. I grew up as a kid idolizing players who spent their entire, or nearly their entire careers with the Red Sox. That was the way of things in baseball back in the 50's and 60's when I was a kid. Of course, Curt Flood changed all of that and while it may be better for the players, it's not better for the fans, or the game. It's possible Jim Rice's number may be the last number ever retired at Fenway. We might have seen Manny's or Pedro's numbers up there some day, but I don't think we'll ever see that. Both of those guys, along with Damon should have become permanent fixtures in Boston folklore, but none of them have, or will. The one guy who has a shot if he can come back and have a few more productive seasons and the Sox manage another championship is David Ortiz. It's a shame. One guy who may have had a shot in Cleveland was Victor Martinez. He's a professional, but what happened to him, and the Cleveland fans when he got traded, should never be allowed to happen. I made up a Power Point presentation of the 2004 Post Season, and I look at it and think about the likes of Bill Mueller, Mark Belhorn, Keith Foulke, who all played key roles and now are no longer in the memories of most of us. For those of us who are purists, there is still a place in our lives for the game today, but it's not like it used to be. I see budding stars like Dustin Pedroia, Jon Lester, Jacoby Ellsbury and Daniel Bard who are the future of the Red Sox, and I know the future might not extend beyond the next four years and then at least some of them will be somewhere else. Very sad.

Andy,
Finally had a second...and Carlos beat me to it...and I have a different answer.
I'm getting 76 meters/minute. The problem was a bit confusing to me (and I'm feeling dumb) LOL.
I assumed a distance of 3550 m and a time of 15 minutes calculating to 236 meters / minute. That works to 76 meters / minute for the slowpoke. Am I missing something?
Report any abuse or spam
Dave:
This is how I came up with the answer:
S = D/T. Speed = 3,550 - 160*10/5+10+10
S = 3550 - 1600/25 = 1950/25 = 78 m/minute.

Andy, thanks for the trivia question! I really enjoyed it though I admit I tried several answers before getting it right. Then I had lunch today with my wife and parents (on my mother's birthday) and they couldn't solve it!
Dave, I'm not sure what you're doing differently, but if you plug in your answers you'll find they don't add up correctly. If the walker travels at a 76 meters/minute pace for 15 minutes, his distance will be 1140 meters. With the cyclist peddaling at a speedy 236 m/min. for 10 min., his distance would be 2360 m. 1140+2360=3500. While Jon and Joe would be close enough to play catch, they'd still be 50 meters (about 164 feet) short of the total distance of 3550 between points A and B!

Hey, Garry, good to see you back from hiatus, even if only temporarily. I could not agree more about players who spend an entire career with one team. Even though they play for the "wrong team", that is one thing I will give Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera ANY DAY. Yes, they have been paid handsomely to stay, but they have STAYED! That is also why I admired Mike Lowell after the 07 WS. No, he has not spent his entire career with us, and may yet be traded, but he gave up additional $$ and an additional year to stay with us in Boston. Not too many any more who will WILLINGLY do that. And yes, he may have to be traded again, but that is on the FO. THANKS MIKE LOWELL! GO SOX!

Talking about retired jersey numbers--the Yankees have 15 retired numbers. Probably at least 2 more are in the offing, Jeter (#2) and Rivera (#42, although #42 is already retired by all teams for Jackie Robinson). And perhaps A-Rod's #13 will be retired in the next 10 years.
I wonder at what point in future of the NY Yankees franchise their players will have to start wearing 3-digit numbers. If they retire, say, 15 numbers every 100 years, then in 300 more years there will be 60 retired numbers, and that means there'll be just enough 1- and 2-digit numbers left for a 40-man roster (notwithstanding the number 0, which perhaps the manager will have to wear). And that doesn't account for the pitching, hitting and bench coach, as well as the 1st and 3rd base coaches.
Man, I wish I'd still be around in the year 2409 to see that. It'll be like Y2K all over again!

Back to yesterday's math problem. You have to make adjustment that Joe rides 160 m/m faster than Jon walks for 10 minutes before they meet. i.e 1600 meters.
Speed is Distance/time.
Jon's Speed = Distance 3,550 m - 1,600 m (to equalize distance)/5 min +10 min +10 min
Jon's speed = 1950/25 = 78 mpm.

Arnie,
OK that was serious fun. Apparently the 12 based system was based on a tribe (I forgot which one) that counted in 12's. You can do it two. Take all your fingers (minus thumbs) and count the bones in your hand (3 each) where they bend). That's how they counted. 4 fingers * 3 bones = 12. With each hand they could count to 24 (hence why we have 24 hours in a day and 12 months in a year.
There is also a metric clock but it never took off so we're stuck with the 12 system. The advantage of course of 12's is the way you can break them down.

Not exactly, the correct answer is 400 meters. Try to solve the problem to see 400 is correct.
CC was solid yesterday. But he could easily be tagged for at least 2 more runs. I don't see why the third base coach held up the runner on Ryan Hpward's 2 out double in the first. The ball Rollins drove deep and caught by Melky Cabrera was a HR on a normal day.
The pressure is on Burnett. The Phillies got what they wanted. Pedro is a freebie. If Pedro pitched well, it's a bonus. If not, so be it. Go Phillies.

Next time I'll use my head instead of doing it in a calculator. I typed the wrong number. Yes it is 400. I saw my arithmetic mistake.
:
v rel = 100 - 64 = 36 km/h
t = 40/3600 (convert which is 1/90 since 4 goes into 36. not .1 Can't believe I did that.
Then when you multiply 1/90 * 36 you get 36 / 90 = .4 or 400 meters. Next time I'll use paper.

bones in hard are carpals (spelling??) and feet metacarpals. Hence the term carpal tunnel syndrome which I am JUST starting to notice here and there despite wrist protection and my wife has a full blown case of it. Nasty injury. I remember on the Jetsons how they joked about finger exercises...ya..
Greg,
Doing additional word problems with Naomi every day despite the class moving on to graphs. I don't want her to struggle and its getting easier every day. What's more exciting to me is that she's developing techniques to solve word problems and that will help her, just like it helped me...except for Andrew's Joe and Jon problem (LOL)

Dave, you are partially correct. Bones in the hand at the wrist are the carpals (yes, spelling is correct), in the hand below the fingers are the metacarpals. In the feet are the tarsals and metatarsals. The fingers and toes bones are both called phalanges. (pronounced fuh-LAN'-gees). Yes, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is from the bones in the hands at the wrist.
Dave, I hope the word problems continue to help Naomi, and I hope they don't give you Advil headaches as much as they (still!) do for me.

Andrew,
Have fun with this one!
.
Zazu. after driving 35 glasses of beer and fifteen different steroids and crack and coke and meth but felt awful confident in driving himself and A-Rod home. He was driving a mere 659 m / s when he hits the brakes. Unfortunately his deceleration is only 10 m /s2 (that's squared, can't do superscripts). It took him 50 meters and a total of 10 of a second before he crashed. What was his final speed before he struck Bug Seling who was hanging out by the front yard that Manny drove into on his way to Bud!

Andrew (that was poorly written. Ignore and try this one)

Greg,
thanks for the correction.

Dave, did Zazu stop midway on his Selig route to "wash up" in the shower? ;)

Greg.
Na...he decided the problem with the illegal narcotics was the shower so if he gave up the showers he'd be morally superior again!

Dave, kinda redefines the idea, "What's in your drinking water?", doesn't it? ;)

Pedro pitched well tonight, Burnett was just a little bit better. Tex got hold of one for his HR, and that was pretty much the difference. No WS sweep this year. On to Philly...

Hey! All!
Nothing against Paul Byrd, but was there a reason, when the Sox FO was desperately scrambling around to put another body in the rotation, that they determined they were better off with Byrdie than Pedro?
Now mind you, I'm not the world's greatest baseball talent judge. I live in Cleveburg, and was never that overwhelmed by Cliff Lee....but then again, I don't evaluate baseball talent for a living!
From my chair in my living room, I thought Pedro's pitches had pretty good movement in the World Baseball Classic, and was surprised when no one paid him early on in the season. Does anyone remember what he was demanding for a full year's salary?...or how much the Phillies gave him to finish the year with them? Recognizing that he's just hung up 2 "L"'s, those have to be 2 of the best pitched losses I've seen in a while!!
What would it take to get him back in a Sox uniform next year? Then, he could finish his career in Boston, and after he's inducted into the HoF, could have "45" retired by the Sox!!
