Haven't we seen this before?

With the Who's Your Daddy chants roaring from the stands at Yankee Stadium on Thursday night, a familiar game unfolded.

Remember the original Who's Your Daddy Game? It was Game 2 of the 2004 American League Championship Series. The score was New York 3, Boston 1.

The score of Thursday's game? New York 3, Philadelphia 1.

Last time, it was Jon Lieber who was just a little better than Pedro Martinez. This time it was A.J. Burnett.

Pedro's stat line in Game 2 of the 2004 ALCS; 6 innings, 4 hits, 3 ER, 4 BB, 7 K's; 113 pitches, 64 strikes.

Pedro's stat line in Game 2 of the 2009 World Series: 6 innings, 6 hits, 3 ER, 2 BB, 8 K's, 107 pitches, 72 strikes.

Thursday's game was tremendous theater, just as I expected. Isn't it always with Pedro? When he walked off the mound midway through that seventh inning, two on and none out, Pedro looked up at the fans heckling him and managed a smile. Clearly, he is having fun at this advanced stage of his career. The pressure is off of Pedro and it is great to watch. He is a certain Hall of Famer no matter what he does from here.

He has indicated he will retire if the Phillies win this World Series. If not, look for Martinez to be back somewhere next year.

He will be up next in Game 6 of this series, again in New York, when more fascination is sure to unfold.

In Game 1, both SPs pitched well, Lee was much better. In Game 2 both SPs pitched wee, Burnett was suprisingly better. Pedro had a quality start.
We have a brand new series. If Hamel is shelled, the series goes to the Yankees. If the Phillies win G 3, the Phillies likely win the series.

Hey Andrew,
Not exactly. Recall that I didn't give you a time. I just gave you a distance (assuming you did problem 2 and not my poorly worded problem one.
The correct answer forces us to use Newton.

Vf (squared) = Vstart (squared) + 2ax
x = 50 m
a = -10 m/s (squared)
Vstart = 549
You will get an answer of 658 m/s when you are done.
In 50 meters Zazu only slowed down a m/s.

Some Yankee fans can be so obnoxious! But then again, I guess you can find meatheads pretty much anywhere.
It's going to be interesting to see if Charlie Manuel pitches Lee in Game 4. Joe Girardi already announced Barney Sabathia for that game, but Manuel has been reluctant to go with a 3 man rotation, plus Lee went over 120 pitches Wednesday and isn't accustomed to pitch on short rest. Besides, Manuel doesn't seem like a guy who would alter his system in response to Girardi. But then again, the Phillies can't afford to hand Game 4 to NY, and the way Carsten Charles (good thing he prefers CC) has been pitching, to not pitch Lee would practically be handing the game over. And if you don't give Lee Game 4, he can't pitch Game 7. I don't see any other way around it!

Interesting note I picked up from in today's reading. Cliff Lee has never pitched on three days rest in his career!

Next 3 games no DH, so bullpens now will be important.

Dave:
I gave that problem back to you. I have no clue what I was doing.

Game 3 ever becomes so important for the Phillies. The pitching matchup in Game 4 will be CC against Blanton. Will Giraldi pitch Burnett on 3 day rest in Game 5 against Lee? We will see how Manuel manges the next 3 games.

Andrew,
You are a math wiz and I'm actually surprised you went to be a lawyer. You would have made a great scientist and I don't say that lightly. OK...I gotta know, why didn't you go into science?

Dave:
I can never fathom I am a scientist. lol. Math is fun but not a career that I am capable of entering into. Anyway, I have sent you an email.

I hope all is well with everyone out there in blog world. Here in Florida, summer continues. Temps. around 90 degrees with some humidity and a wind chill of 88 degrees. lol.

Cliff Lee threw first pitch strikes and won.... Burnett did the same thing last night. Hmmmmmmmmmmm what a concept. lol. It absolutely kills me to write this but Burnett was awesome last night! Wash my mouth out with soap. LOL!!

Pedro was solid but once again a manager that didn't have a clue when to pull him. I thought Pedro should have been yanked out after the 5th innning but should have never started the seventh, no way! Not sure what Manuel was thinking. The H.R. by Matsui was a good pitch, sometimes the hitter gets the best of you.

I think whoever wins game 3 will win the W.S.---I think the Phillies will win tomorrow night.
Game 3 is pivotal and someone not named Rivera must be able to get someone out when coming out of the pen. Girardi's confidence in Hughes, Chamberlain and others are almost at zero! I think the Phillies will expose the Yankees pen the next three games!

More missed calls by the umps last night, no surprise there! Replay is a must. I wasn't really for it but after watching some of these playoff games, I have changed my mind! I'm not sure what these guys are watching.

Celtics looking strong, 60-65 wins is my prediction!

Brian, you took the words right out of my mouth about the weather here AND about managing Pedro.. I thought that Grady Little had been "beamed" into the dugout and I said as much to my husband... Its sort of like a bad relationship.. sometimes you just dont know when to say goodbye (in Pedros case, good night!!) lol

Tonights meeting between the Celtics and the Bulls was not a game.. It was an opld fashioned Butt Whooping!!!! I think it was played in the woodshed!!! lol

Brian:
I thought you were referring to Francona, a manager didn't have a clue when to yank a pitcher. LOL
At least Phillies fans are happy that Uncle isn't managing the Phillies. It wouldn't make a difference just one run scored against the Yankees.
Game 3 is more important to the Phillies than to the Yanks. Go Phillies.

Good morning BP'ers.. We are all family here, so I'm asking a favor of you all.

Julias father was operated on and is not doing as well as they hoped. I ask that you all please say a prayer or take a moment to think about Jules and her family. As you know she is always the first to chip in a prayer or a thought for all of us when needed. Its her turn.

Well Phillie have their collective backs against the wall... Its now or almost never.... PLEASE GO PHILLIES.. and I'll even lend them my trademark statement:
IDOBELIEVE.....................

Ellen,
No problem and sorry to hear about that. You got it and yes we are family here now that we got rid of our unruly son!

Zazu met with Scott Boras, his agent, and said this:
"OK I want to have half the season off or 100 games with a 'leg' injury and a 'brain injury' but I do want free showers after every game. That's 200 showers or 100 % of the season. I also want to make 900 million next year. I made too little last year. I want my salary up 70% to 900 million from 45 million. I also want a hundred thousand dollar car which is only 1% of 900 million so that's cheap. Got all that.
Scott Boras said, "ah...can we discuss the math here!"
.
Question: What did Scott mean by that!

Hi All!

Thanks Ellen! Dad is doing better - they gave him a transfusion - they are having trouble regulating his blood pressure and since he had had a stroke a few years ago it is critical that they be able to do that. Also the change from IV pain meds to oral pain meds didn't go well and he was not very lucid yesterday. I'll keep you all posted when I can and THANK YOU ALL!!!

Julia

Oh Dave - sorry my brain hurts to much to answer that one right now!

Speaking of math, Dave, is Naomi tackling division of fractions yet? If so, how is she doing? How has she been doing with fractions pluttification (that "times a number" thing)? ;)
GO NAOMI! :)

Hey Greg,
No, its strange they didn't cover division of fractions this semester but to be honest, I'm not complaining! Been two months of fractions and division is fractions is really just a variation of multiplication anyway. It's easy compared to those #@$#$ word problems.
She's starting graphs and finds it a great relief and so do I.
Pluttification is getting better but we're doing extra problems every night for her until it becomes as easy and 1 + 1. Whew, being a parent is HARD work Greg.
How was Halloween. Naomi was an oxygen atom...technically not possible since oxygen is found as a diatomic molecule in nature but who cares. I spent 10 hours setting up an LED circuit for the electrons that lit up. I was going to add flashing with a 555 timer but called it a day when hour 10 reached. I had to make the circuit and make it work in a belt with a battery pack. Went through several LED's until I found ones that could take a eight year old's energy level.
Sounds like poor Philly is having their own scary story tonight. Not going to be pretty for them but unless things change, NYC is going to bring home the crown.
Dave...

Yeah, Philly keeps leaving themselves with RISP. They won't win anything that way.
The Yankees must think the pitchers' mound is their dugout--I keep seeing Posada and Girardi camped out there with CC. Hmmm...
Halloween went quietly, thank goodness. Not my favorite holiday.

I could've sworn I was watching the Red Sox (not the Phillies) tonight in the first inning--a typical Brad Penny start (not Joe Blanton), and then another strikeout by David Ortiz (not Ryan Howard) in the bottom of the first. I had to rub my eyes to ensure that I hadn't had some kind of weird flashback.

Blanton could easily pass for Penny.

Dave, I find that VERY strange that they would not cover division of fractions at this stage, but what do I know? ;) Have fun with graphing--I don't have enough Motrin for that stuff, let alone word problems. And yes, I HATED word problems myself, let alone when we did them in GED labs!
Clever costume idea! I guess it is hard to carry Halloween candy, though, if you shrink yourself down to the size of an oxygen atom! (Were they able to see her? Or was that the "trick"?) Sounds like "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids"... ;)

You're right, Ron, that Phillies inning did look like one of ours! Hmmm!... And yes, Blanton and Penny do have some resemblance! (Is that a good thing? I'm not so sure!...)

Both built like tanks, both with a little chin jazz, both with high stirrups, and both with 6+ ERAs.

I rather like the Phillies, but they're overmatched and are about to lose game 4. I guess with Cliff Lee pitching tomorrow they stand a chance on sending the series back to NY, but I don't like their chances with either Pedro or Hamels.

Charlie Manuel should have rolled the dice with Lee tonight.

Feliz Navidad!!

We all dislike the Yankees, right? But I thing we all agree that this is a great team, and I think we all understand that A-Rod, Jeter, Rivera, Sabbathia, etc. are all outstanding players. I don't begrudge them when they succeed.

But Jabba? I take special pleasure when he fails. He's such a tool.

Hey, should Manuel have done a double-switch when he brought in Lidge? Lidge is due up first in the bottom of the ninth, so he'll have to be pinch hit for. Had Manuel did the double-switch, he'd be able to stick with Lidge for the 10th if Philly doesn't score.

One more Red Sox similarity: Brad Lidge = Jonathan Papelbon.

Pap did a Brad Lidge this year, no question. I think the ball Pujols hit off Lidge is still in orbit!

I could be wrong, but I think the only closer this playoff season not to have blown a save is Rivera...for that reason he should be the World Series MVP.

Greg,
I'm not worried about division of fractions. I showed her a couple of examples and she was doing a bunch before getting bored with them so she knows it on her own with Dad. I'm sure they will but it hasn't been covered yet but face it, division of fractions is pretty darn easy. I'm glad they're pushing the word problems hard because face it, those are the ones that you absolutely have to work hard at.
Graphing is easy for Naomi so I can relax. Word problems are still trying on her but she's getting there. I worry about the test coming but we have another week before it hits her so all good...ya...all good...ya all good...OK I'm a little worried but she'll do fine. Aren't Dad's supposed to be constantly worried!
Naomi got a boat full of candy. One house had a chemist in it so it was great that he knew the costume right away. Glad Halloween is over. I love it, it's my favorite holiday but that costume was a lot of work!
Dave...

Dave, I hope division of fractions is indeed easy for Naomi. It is easy enough if one understands multiplications of fractions, and it is only slightly more complicated thereafter. It is. however, a natural progression after multiplications of fractions, and it prepares her for decimals, so I would hope both would be "old hat" by the time decimals roll around. After all, decimals are formed via division--of those same fractions!
Have fun with graphing. You are certainly right that they need to hit word problems hard, as much as we might dislike them! Take care.
