Saltalamacchia latest to catch injury bug

Is there any end to the injury barrage? Today’s news is that Jarrod Saltalamacchia has been placed on the disabled list with a lower right leg infection. Dusty Brown will take his place on the roster. Saltalamacchia is currently at Massachusetts General Hospital getting treated, and the hope is that they can knock this infection out within a few days.

Meanwhile, Josh Beckett made big news by getting shelled in his last two starts. But he was dominant in his first three starts off the DL so perhaps it’s not quite panic city yet. That said, the Sox desperately need Beckett to come up big tonight.

The Tigers didn’t do the Red Sox any favors in the Bronx. They are about to get swept by the Yankees.The Rays start a West Coast trip in Oakland tonight.

First of four in the Bronx

The most critical juncture of the season to this point is officially underway, with the Sox playing the first of four in the Bronx.

Hideki Okajima to the DL? It might sound mean to say, but that can’t hurt the Red Sox. He has a .350 opponents batting average this year. Felix Doubront, who has just one Minor League relief appearance under his belt, can not be worse. If anything, maybe the downtime will allow Okajima to get hismelf healthy and effective again when he returns.

While the perception of the Red Sox is that they’ve become plucky underdogs with all the injuries, manager Terry Francona made it clear today that the team still has very high expectations, injuries or no injuries.

It was mentioned to Francona today that he has kept upbeat despite all that has gone wrong. He doesn’t know any other way to be.

“You know what, I think the players deserve for us to show up and be optimistic,” Francona said. “Some days, you lose a tough game, you [still have to] show up the next day. I don’t think it does anybody any good to show up with your tail between your legs. We want to have an atmosphere where players want to do the right thing. So I think we need to do that too. I think it also helps when, the way our guys are going about their business, we, as a staff, enjoy it. We’ve made some mistakes. I think our room for error is a little less now with some of our guys being hurt. That doesn’t mean we can’t win. it doesn’t mean guys aren’t trying. I think we’re trying to embrace the challenge as opposed to whining about it.”

Yes, Francona says, his team has had a consistently strong resolve. But that is not the only goal.

“I think we’ve pulled together,” Francona said. “We’re not in first place. This is not where we want to be. But we’re trying to be. I’ll let you know that at the end of the year. We’re giving our best. Our goal is to win. we’re not where we want to be. I don’t think that means we can’t be. We’ve got a long road ahead against some really good teams but we’ll see how it goes. But it is fun. The challenge is fun.”

Can something be gained out of this season even if the Sox don’t make the playoffs? Francona wasn’t in the mood to go there.

“We’re at August [6]? I can’t answer how I’m going to feel on October first,” Francona said. “That would be crazy. We’re going to play until they send us home. I hope it lasts a long time. Nobody knows what’s going to happen tomorrow or the next day as we’ve found out. I guess my point was, the guys in the clubhouse have done a really terrific job of trying to do the best they can. We’ve had some games that aren’t too pretty. We’ve not always been perfect. We’ll see if we can be good enough.”

Time for Sox fans to get it right on Damon

Four years and nearly three months ago, Johnny Damon came back to Fenway for the first time since leaving the Red Sox and the fans had a chance to thank him for the vital role he played in helping the team win their first World Series in 86 years.

Sox followers responded with some of the loudest boos I have ever heard in my nine years covering the team. Each Damon at-bat for the next four seasons had a similarly negative response.

Yes, he had the gall to wear Pinstripes. All the boos that took place after the first at-bat? Perfectly understandable. Damon was a Yankee, and all Yankees are booed at Fenway.

But in that first visit back, he deserved recognition and appreciation for four terrific seasons in which he played hurt and played hard constantly.

Listen, the Sox offered Damon four years at $40 million. It was a nice offer. The Yankees offered four years at $52 million. It was a much better offer. Damon took the money, which isn’t all that out of the ordinary in today’s sports landscape. Whether you agree with his decision or not, there is no disputing what he did in his time with the Sox.

So now, on Friday night, he comes back to Fenway again, this time wearing a Detroit Tigers uniform. Time to get it right, Red Sox Nation. Now is your chance to let bygones be bygones and give Damon — who coined the “Idiots” moniker in ’04 — his due for being one of the key Idiots.

Remember the two homers Damon hit in Game 7 of ’04 at Yankee Stadium, the first being a game-breaking grand slam? Remember the leadoff homer Damon hit in Game 4 of the ’04 World Series against the Cardinals? Remember the severe concussion Damon endured in Game 5 of the Division Series against Oakland in ’03, and how he got himself back in the lineup by Game 3 of the ALCS? Remember the overall numbers (.295 average, .362 OBP, 461 runs, 98 stolen bases, two All-Star appearances) put up for the Sox? Think about those things on Friday night when Damon steps to the plate in the top of the first.

After that, do whatever you want. But every other key member of the ’04 Sox who went to other teams has been appreciated at some point the last few years. Dave Roberts, Orlando Cabrera, Pedro Martinez, Derek Lowe, Kevin Millar, Trot Nixon. They’ve all gotten their due. Now it’s time to give Damon his.

Finale in Bronx

Tough one last night, obviously. There are no other nominations for toughest loss of the year. That one took the proverbial cake, only because what was about to become Boston’s best win of the year became the toughest loss. Jonathan Papelbon had never had a game like that in his career where he gave up two home runs in one relief outing.

Frustrating losses create overall disenchantment, and that has been evident. For instance, Mike Lowell feels out of place on the 2010 Red Sox. Now that David Ortiz is hitting, he doesn’t feel as if he has a role. In fact, Lowell even wondered if he is a hindrance to the current setup of the roster.

“I think it’s a little unfortunate, but I think somewhat it’s painfully evident I don’t really have a role on the team,” Lowell said. I think I had a temporary role but I think that was more to the fact that we had young outfielders because of the injuries to Jacoby and Cam and David got off to a slow start. David’s swinging the bat a lot better, which I’m actually happy for. I actually think he’s still a big presence in our lineup. I don’t really care what the numbers say. He’s that guy that you still fear that he doesn’t have to make really good contact and he can still hit the ball out of the park.

“As a friend and as a teammate, you don’t like to see those guys struggle. You just don’t. Obviously I think there’s a catch how it affects me. When Jacoby and Cam come back, I just don’t really know what my role is. With those two in the lineup I don’t know who would I hit for. When I hit I get pinch-run for. I don’t play defense. I think sometimes you feel like the team might be better off if you’re not it. I just eat up a roster spot, I really do. I don’t know. If anything it’s a good feeling that I’ve had so many teammates come up to me and they say they sympathize with my situation. I think I’ve truly agonized over it. But it’s not good or bad, it’s just reality. It’s just reality. I don’t know what else to do.”

Then there is the matter of Daisuke Matsuzaka and Victor Martinez seemingly having some communication issues during Monday’s game.

“Again, I think it was frustration showing. My point to both of them was, OK, if we’re frustrated, how do we make it better? It’s easy to show frustration but how do you make it better? That’s what we’ll try to do.”,” Francona said.

What could cure all these issues? Maybe a good old 10 or 12-game winning streak

Bronx-bound

Hey all. Sorry for the lack of blog entries the last few days. I wasn’t on the trip to Detroit. But I am on the Amtrak right now, ready to get back into action.

The Red Sox need some sort of jolt. Every time they establish just a bit of momentum, they take a step back. Saturday night’s game was a perfect example, with a 6-1 lead and unable to close it out. And then another tough loss followed on Sunday.

Healthy bodies are coming. Mike Cameron should play Tuesday; Jacoby Ellsbury starts his rehab today.In the meantime, the Red Sox cannot afford to fall back any further in the standings. Seven and a half games is a sizable deficit before Memorial Day.

We have two strong pitching matchups for this series. Tonight, it’s Dice-K vs. Phil Hughes. Matsuzaka’s last start was one of the best he’s had during his time with the Red Sox. If he can duplicate that, perhaps he will become a serious weapon for this rotation.

And tomorrow, it’s Josh Beckett against CC Sabathia for the second time this season. Naturally, it turned into a slugfest on Opening Night. I don’t expect either ace to allow that to happen this time. All eyes will be on Beckett, as he has been highly inconsistent thus far this year.

A sign of a day gone bad

Outfielder Jonathan Van Every came on to pitch the ninth inning for the Red Sox on Saturday. In other words, the day went exactly as the Red Sox didn’t want it to. It was a fairly close game through six, as New York led 6-3. But the Yankees got two in the seventh and four in the eighth to make it a romp in motion.

On came Van Every for the ninth, and he served up a titanic home run to Mark Teixeira. It was the third homer of the day for Teixeira, who had just two on the season when the game started.

The last thing the Red Sox wanted to do this series is lose more ground to a division rival. But they’ve dropped two, and hoped to avoid a sweep Sunday night when Jon Lester takes the mound.

Red Sox are back in season

Now that the Yankees have capped off their 27th World Series championship, the work begins all over again for 30 general managers. This is their time of year. Free agents can’t start filing as early as today.

Jason Bay and Boston’s other eligible free agents aren’t eligible to sign with another team until Nov. 19.

What will this Hot Stove season bring? While the lasting image of the 2009 Red Sox is a sweep by the Angels in the Division Series, the fact of the matter is that this team is in pretty good shape going forward.

That being said, you know Theo Epstein will do something significant. The question is, exactly what?

Will there be major changes or subtle tweaks?

On a side note, it was too bad that Pedro just didn’t have it last night. I could tell from the first pitch it wasn’t going to be his night. He didn’t have that look of excitement he normally has when he knows he has his good stuff. He was so deliberate between pitches. There was little to no life on his fastball. And Matsui got him.

The next baseball game we will see will take place under the warm sun of Fort Myers. Bundle up until then!

Pedro on deck as the drama builds

Now, we have ourselves a full-fledged World Series. This, thanks to Chase Utley and Cliff Lee, who have, in tandem, kept the Phillies in this series.

Pedro Martinez will pitch Game 6 again in enemy territory at Yankee Stadium with a chance to make this Fall Classic truly classic and force a Game 7. The Yankees will counter with Andy Pettitte, and you wonder how he will fare on three days rest at this stage of his career.

Obviously not having a fourth starter is a glaring hole for the Yankees. The next couple of days will tell us if it is a fatal hole.

I’m thinking Game 6 gets the best ratings in the New England market for any non-Red Sox World Series game ever. Still a whole lot of Pedro fans in the Nation.

Phillies will fight to make it a Series

I remember when I was growing up, the Super Bowl went through a bad rut where it seemed like almost every year, it was a blowout. The two games that stick in my mind during my youth that were great games were the 49ers-Bengals in 1988, and the Giants-Bills in 1990. Other than that, blah.

Is the same thing going on with the World Series? If the Yankees win tonight, that would make it six years in a row the Fall Classic has been five games or less.

It would be nice to see the Phillies push this thing back to New York for Game 6, and, who knows, maybe even a Game 7?

That double steal by Damon last night was one of the most surreal things I’ve ever seen. It just goes to show you can see something completely new every time you watch a baseball game. I still can’t believe nobody on the Phillies made an attempt to cover third.

Let’s see what happens tonight. The Phillies should have plenty of fire in their eyes with Cliff Lee taking the mound on full rest.

Five years ago today …

For those Red Sox fans — and there are a lot of you — bummed that you are not watching your team play in the ALCS, keep this in mind:

Today is the five-year anniversary of Game 7 of the 2004 ALCS. I think that was the second most significant win in Red Sox history, right after Game 4 of that 2004 World Series.

Think about it, the Red Sox were down 3-0, which used to be a death sentence in a postseason series. The Red Sox are still the only team in either baseball or basketball to overcome a 3-0 series in any postseason series.

And how it became possible? They came back against Mariano Rivera in the ninth inning of Game 4. Millar walked, Roberts stole, and Big Papi sent everyone home in the 12th.

That set the stage for an even wilder Game 5. Papi again started the trek back with a Monster Mash against Tom Gordon. Millar again drew a walk. Roberts again pinch-ran. Trot Nixon — who had made two game-saving plays defensively earlier in the game — came through with a hit-and-run singe to right, making it corners and nobody out, Sox still down by a run in the 8th. The Yankees went to Mo again. Varitek came through with a sacrifice fly to tie it.

Three white-knuckle innings out of the bullpen by Tim Wakefield — with Varitek catching him — and finally Papi sent everyone home again, this time a “little flair” as Jerry Trupiano called it. Then Joe Buck proclaimed, “Damon is running to the plate, he can keep on running to New York … Game 6 tomorrow night.”

And yes, Game 6. The bloody sock. The A-Rod slap. The Bellhorn homer off the chest of a fan that was originally ruled a double. And pure guts by Keith Foulke, who finished his three-day, 100-pitch stand by blowing a fastball by Tony Clark to set up Game 7.

Game 7, the Red Sox sent Derek Lowe to the mound on two days rest. And he was brilliant. So was Johnny Damon, clocking two homers.

By the time it ended, the Red Sox were spraying each other with champagne in the very same clubhouse they were crying in one year earlier after the Grady/Aaron Boone fiasco.

Remember five years ago. It is probably one of your greatest sports memories ever.
